- News item in the West Union Herald, January 10, 1946:
"Sgt. Joe Summers, son of Mr. & Mrs. J. P. Summers, has arrived home from the E.T.O. and has received his discharge after serving almost four years in the Army. He served two years of this time in England and France with the Engineers Supply Division.
"Sgt. Summers and wife, the former Mary Freeman, are spending some time in Pittsburgh, Pa., at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Dunbar."
(NOTE: Next door neighbors of the Summers family in the 1940 Census of West Union were Robert Dunbar and his wife and daughter.)
