News article, "West Union Herald," Thursday, Sep 19 1918, front page, in its entirety:
HENRY REED MISSING IN ACTION
"The friends of Henry Reed received a telegram from the war department Sunday stating that he was missing in action July 20. Whether Mr. Reed was killed or taken prisoner by the Germans is not known. Some time ago he was reported wounded in action, and letters received by his friends later showed that he was getting along all right. He undoubtedly had recovered from his wounds and returned to service. Henry has a large number of friends who join with his sorrowing wife and relatives in hoping that he may yet turn up somewhere. If he is not killed, he is beyond doubt a prisoner in Germany."
News article, "Doddridge County Republican," Thursday, Sep 19 1918, front page, in its entirety:
LOCAL SOLDIER MISSING
"Mrs. Henry Reed of this place received the sad message last Sunday evening that her husband, a soldier of the American Expeditionary Force, has been missing since July 20th, at which time his regiment is supposed to have been engaged in the great Rheims-Soissons battle.
Prior to this, he had been wounded in action and had spent some weeks in an army hospital in France.
While there is yet hope that he may some day return to home and loved ones, the profound sympathy of everyone who knows them goes out to the bereaved family in their dark hours of sorrow and agonizing uncertainty."
An excerpt from a front-page article titled "Our Soldier Boys" in the Doddridge County Republican of Thursday, December 5, 1918:
"Henry Reed, formerly a well known West Union teamster, now with the A.E.F., was reported missing about June 23rd, and last Wednesday, five months later, a message came to his wife, Mrs. Lula Reed, that he is wounded and being cared for in a hospital in France."
