According to company muster rolls, in Jan/Feb 1862 and April to Aug 1862, he was a guard at No. 5 tunnel and bridges of the Northwest Virginia Railroad. His duty remained in the same area until January 1863. He died of typhoid fever/pneumonia at his home in Smithton (Smithburg) on Feb 18 1863.
