The upright monument is inscribed with her 1861 birth date, but no death date. Findagrave reports the following explanation:
"Mariah Elizabeth Smith Kinney was the mother of my great-grandmother, Anna Loretta Metcalf. Sometime after Mariah Elizabeth's (sometimes spelled Maria E. Kinney) husband Sylvester died, she moved to Los Angeles, California to live with her daughter, Nancy Olive Kinney Finley. She died there in April of 1938 and was buried there because of the cost of transporting her remains back to West Virginia. Several years ago, her descendants from her daughter, Anna Loretta Metcalf, looked into the possibility of relocating her remains back to West Virginia.
