    Notes
    • Local news item, "West Union Herald," Thursday, Oct 14 1915, in its entirety:
"J. S. K. Davis, of Lick Run, New Milton district, was in the city the other day. He is one of the old citizens who have never changed their locality much, having been born and reared near where he now lives. Mr. Davis is about three score and ten, but few gray hairs adorn his head, and he is as frisky and gay as a 15-year-old boy. For the present, he is selling a preparation of herbs, to preserve youth, but alas for us old, wrinkled and gray fellows, our youth has gone. But as Whittier says:
"'Ah Well; for us all some sweet hope lies deeply buried from human eyes.'"

NOTE: The above is a quote from the John Greenlief Whittier 1854 poem "Maud Miller."
