- Hanna's "Ohio Valley Genealogies," p. 42, states that Alexander Gaston (1750-1840), a great-grandson of the first Irish William, remained in Ireland when his four siblings Joseph (who married Martha Gaston), Robert, Matthew and Jane (who married a Walker) emigrated to America and settled in South Carolina.
But it has been reported by some researchers, including Edward H. Couey, a descendant of this Alexander, that he left Ireland in late 1772 with Reverend William Martin's five shiploads of Scottish Presbyterian Covenanters; was granted land on Jan 6, 1773 in present- day York Co, SC; moved to present-day Madison Co, KY by 1787, back to old Abbeville Co, SC by 1797, back to Kentucky after 1800 where he sold his property in 1808, and moved by 1815 to Randolph Co, IL, where he shortly died. Original sources for this information are not known. [2]
