      In about 1850 (after July, per enumeration date of census), James Estep Gaston and family moved from Warren, Trumbull Co, Ohio, to Monmouth, Illinois, and then to Davenport, Iowa, later settling at Des Moines. [Hanna, p. 43] James Estep Gaston became acquainted with Alexander Campbell, founder of the Christian Church, liked his teachings and became a Christian minister, as did brothers Robert and Joseph. James was the first permanent minister of the Central Christian Church in Des Moines and was one of the early supporters of Drake University, a Christian Church school in Des Moines. [1, 6]
