    Notes 
    • Although a lawyer in his early life, Rufus Maxwell did not practice the profession after the Civil War. He was Justice of the Peace in Lewis County, but moved to Tucker County in 1856, where he filled the offices of District Attorney, Superintendent of Schools, County Surveyor, and was a representative in the West Virginia House of Delegates 1866-1870. In 1852 he received a patent for his improvement to churns. [1]
