    • Headstone inscription reads "In Memory of John Gaston, who departed this life September 10th A.D. 1823, aged 83 years & 4 months." A separate metal marker staked into the ground adjacent to the headstone reads "Revolutionary Soldier, 1775 - 1883, Placed by the Monongahela Valley Chapter D.A.R."
    Notes 
    • Resided in Upper Freehold Township, Monmouth County NJ, from before 1760 until after 1767, moving then to Mt Bethel Twp, Northampton Co, PA, where he took up 275 acres of land in Feb 1772. Served as a Major in the Revolutionary War. Around 1780-82, moved to Rostraver Twp, Westmoreland Co, PA, and in about 1790 to Peters (now Union) Township, Washington Co, PA, his wife's sister Elizabeth accompanying them. He purchased a large tract of land there known as Belmont, after which the area became known as Gastonville. The "Gaston House" there was built in 1908 and occupied by Gastons until 1964.

      From a listing of baptisms in "History of the Old Tennent Church," p. 210: "John Gaston Jr., whose Father was Murthered by the Indians; had bap. William, Sep. 6, 1761; Joseph, July 17, 1763; John, Apr. 14, 1765; Samuel & James, Twin Children, Apr. 12, 1767." [6, 7]
