- "Davis - The Settlers of Salem WV," p. 465, reports that Burleigh Hickman (with wife Sarah Rulina Gaston) also had a foster child, Elizabeth Jane Travis, of Dayton, Ohio, who in turn had a daughter, Tonya R. But members of the immediate family, notably Elizabeth Clarke Lerman (the granddaughter of Sarah's sister Elizabeth Jane Gaston Sharps), correct these inaccuracies by identifying Burleigh and Sarah's foster child as their niece Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Sharps (the daughter of Sarah's sister Elizabeth Jane), and Betty's daughter as Tonda Rae Travis. Betty was raised by them from infancy following the death of her mother.
