Notation on death record states "Killed by Train. No inquest held." An article in the Mar 28 2006 issue of the West Union Herald quotes the 1942 newspaper account of the accident as follows: "Sherman Bond, 76, a farmer of Yeager's Run on the boundary of Doddridge and Tyler counties, about nine miles west of West Union, was killed by train No. 11 at 5:30 o'clock Sunday evening 19 April 1942. The body was found at 9 o'clock Monday morning by a B & O foreman. Coroner D. J. Cunningham reported that no inquest was necessary. Sheriff Tucker stated that Bond was struck at the Mulligan crossing where his hand was found. His body was dragged for a distance of 2500 feet, and was badly mangled."
