    • Sarah was born to her mother, Rachel Lowther, before the marriage to her stepfather William Reed. Her natural father was Elmore Burton. She thus was born Sarah Columbia Lowther, but assumed the name Reed of her stepfather. [per daughter Maggie Husk Brannon] She was identified in daughter Bessie's obituary, however, as Sarah Burton, and in husband's death certificate as Sarah Lowther.
