    • A local news item in the West Union Herald of May 15, 1913:
      "Levi Maxwell, one of the business men of Smithton, had a narrow escape one evening last week when his horse became frightened at an automobile and ran away, throwing Mr. Maxwell from the buggy. Outside of a few bruises, he was not seriously hurt."

      Local news item under the heading Smithton News, "Doddridge County Republican," Thursday, October 14 1915, in its entirety:
