Child identified as Minnie Eliza Gaston, the fifth child born to her mother. We have found no other evidence of any previous child, and no basis for this child's last name being that of her mother. Her parents had been married for well over a year at the time of her birth. Father: David Hanes [sic] Jones, age 31, b. Marion Co. Mother: Susan Gaston, age 28. Delayed birth record was filed on Jan 22 1945 by M. S. Gaston, relationship given as uncle. This would be Susan's 81-year-old brother Morris Samuel Gaston. It is possible that his recording of the child's last name as Gaston rather than Jones was an error, and that he mistakenly entered "five" as the child's birth order number in confusion with the total number of children that the mother ultimately had. (Her obituary, however, stated that she was predeceased by 5 brothers and 2 sisters, not identified by name.) It is also noted that while Minnie's obituary stated her birthplace as Doddridge County, the community of Holbrook is within Ritchie County on the border with Doddridge County; Ota Reed Fraker, a first cousin, gives Minnie's birthplace as "near Berea," also in Ritchie County. In her marriage record (per Wes Cochran's "Ritchie County Marriages 1843-1915"), Minnie was identified as Minnie E. Jones, age 20, born in Ritchie County. - [S14] Obituary.
