- Immediately upon graduation from Fairmont West High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve in World War II. While on maneuvers at Fort Meade, Maryland, he received severe shrapnel wounds. He was taken to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC, where he died two weeks later. [1]
