- At the urging of his older brother, Jim, Terry joined 1st Platoon 363rd MP Company Weston, WV in 1980. He went through basic training at Ft. Dix, NJ, in April and May of that year. In 1997, he accepted the position of Unit Administrator for the same unit, now designated as Detachment 1363rd MP Company located in Jane Lew, WV. With this position came the responsibilities for all daily operations of the unit, building maintenance and security, and making sure all soldier files were complete and up to date.
During his military career, Terry climbed to the rank of Sgt. 1st Class, serving in many capacities, including Platoon Sgt. He was activated four times, twice being deployed to overseas combat theaters. The activations were: Operation Desert Storm, Kuwait, 1991, where the unit set a new military record for the most enemy prisoners of war processed in a 24-hour period; Operation Noble Eagle, Tobyhanna, PA, 2001; Operation Iraqi Freedom, Iraq 2003, because of their "advanced experience" his team was fondly referred to as the "Geritol Patrol" by the rest of the troops; and Operation Iraqi Freedom, Grafton, WV, 2009.
During this last deployment, physical limitations associated with service related injuries, prevented Terry from traveling overseas. Instead he was appointed, as a Sgt. 1st Class, to the position of Rear Detachment Commander, a post usually filled by an officer. Terry was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his efficiency, dedication, and esprit de corps during this deployment. Other awards include: two Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, Army Good Conduct Medal, eight Army Reserve Component Achievement Medals, two National Defense Service Medals, Southwest Asia Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, three NCO Professional Development Ribbons, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, six Army Reserve Overseas Training Ribbons, Kuwait Liberation Medal for Saudi Arabia, Kuwait Liberation Medal for Kuwait, numerous Certificates of Achievement, and numerous Certificates of Appreciation.
