    • Age 52 on his headstone would put his birth in 1836 based on the 2 May 1888 death date on the headstone. But his death record show that his actual death date was 2 May 1887, age not given. His marriage, military and census records indicate put his birth in about 1837 or 1838. His age in the 1850 Census was 13, name listed as Pleasant Helmick..

    • Military records indicate that Miles P. Helmick, age 23, mustered in as a Private with Co B, 31st Infantry (Confederacy) on 18 May 1861, and that he deserted in about April 1862. He was also listed as mustering with Co C, 62nd Mounted Infantry, and Co K, 25th Infantry. In January 1863, his status was listed as under arrest for desertion. He was transferred on 28 Feb 1863 and was mustered out as a deserter at Camp Washington on 28 Apr 1863.

      However, the U.S. Civil War Pension Index shows that Susannah Helmick, widow of Miles P. Helmick, filed a widows claim on 16 Sep 1890. His unit was listed as Lambert's Company, West Virginia State Guards.
