    • Mary Chapin and John Stringer Hoffman (1821-1877) dated in the mid-1840s, but neither ever married. He was a Clarksburg attorney who later (1859-1861) was elected to the Virginia state legislature (1859-1861), served as a Colonel in the 31st Virginia Infantry (CSA), and ultimately became a Justice of the West Virginina State Supreme Court of Appeals.(1873-1876).
