- Listed as mother-in-law Mary J. McGee, 72, b. May 1828, widowed, in the household of her daughter Virginia B. (McGee) Pratt and her family. However, in the same census she and her husband James R. McGee were enumerated together in Lyon District, Preston County. Circumstantially, it appears that James and Mary had separated at about that time. Because of social stigma in that era, It was not unusual for a separated or divorced woman to indicate her marital status as widowed. In the 1910 Census of Kingwood, Preston County, she had reverted to her maiden name, being listed in son James W. McGee's household as mother Mary J. Britton, 80, widowed. Nonetheless, in her death record she was identified as Mary Jane McGee, 90, widowed. Her husband James had remarried in 1901 and died in 1913.
