Morgan M. Shirk died in 1854 from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.
"Driving with his wife, eldest child Martha and baby Frank to visit his parents in Mercer county, he stopped his buggy and got out to shoot some game as a present to his mother. In removing the gun from the bed of the buggy, the trigger caught and he received a mortal wound. He died less than an hour later near Wurtemburg in Lawrence County where his wife had frantically driven to hunt help."
