An excerpt from a front-page article titled "Our Soldier Boys" in the Doddridge County Republican of Thursday, December 5, 1918:
"Mrs. Susan Britton received a letter a few days since from her son, Vance, who is now recovering at Dartford, Kent, Eng., from wounds received in action."

Vance Britton's letter to his mother was printed in the same edition of the Doddridge County Republican, page 4:
      Kent, England
      Nov. 10, 1918
      Dear mother:
I will try and write you a few lines to let you know how I am feeling. I suppose you will hear about me being wounded before this letter reaches you. I am not hurt bad. I just got a little too close to one of Fritz's big shells and a piece got me in the ankle. I will probably be well by the time this letter reaches you. We've sure got Fritz on the go. This is the second drive that I have been in since I landed in France. If I had been lucky enough to last about 6 or 8 hrs. longer, my division was relieved then. But I can considere myself lucky the way it is. I am in an American hospital now, I am glad of it. I was in an Australian hospital for a few days, but I didn't lit it so well. Well, mother, I will have to close for this time.
      From your boy,
      Vance B. B.
