- Although not proven, family legend says that Thomas and Marilla Balis only had one son, Peter Earl Balis, and that Pete was not Marilla's biological son, but rather what is referred to in the mountains as a "woods colt."
Thomas and Marilla's tombstone is inscribed under their own names with the phrase "and children." Although census records indicate otherwise, perhaps they had children that were stillborn or died in infancy.

1910 Census, Jackson Co, WV (Ravenswood District), enumerated on Apr 27 1910:
Thomas Balis, 53, b. Ohio (both parents b. Ohio), farmer, married 23 yrs; wife Berilla, 58, b. Ohio (both parents b. Ohio), married 23 yrs, mother of 1 child (still living); son Peter E, 18, b. WVa, single, farm laborer.
