- Alexander Gaston, along with his brothers, John and William, went to County Antrim in Northern Ireland between 1662 and 1668, during the time of the persecution of Protestants in Scotland. Alexander Gaston left many descendants in and around Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland. One of them was a certain Miss Gaston of Killycowan, who was reportedly the great-grandmother of U.S. President Chester A. Arthur. (Exact lineage not specified, has never been determined, and the connection is considered tenuous at best. The genealogy of President Chester A. Arthur can be found at various websites, including our own treatment at www.doddridgecountyroots.com/register/arthur.htm ) [1, 2]
