    • Some researchers identify Agnes as possibly the daughter of Phillip of Navarre, and it is also said that she was accused of witchcraft in 1650 [per "Surnames of Scotland" by George F. Black]. But other researchers have convincingly refuted those assertions, and have further cast doubt that the wife of Jean Gaston was named Agnes at all. Although we side more with the skeptics, we nonetheless report Jean Gaston's wife as Agnes simply out of tradition. [1, 2]

      The entry for Gaston, in its entirety: "GASTON. An old Roxburghshire surname. David Gastoun in the toun of Lessudden, 1562 (Lauder). Hendrie Gastoun, tenant on lands of the Abbey of Kelso, 1567 (Kelso, p. 527). David Gaustone or Gaustoune in Lessuddane, 1608, and Thomas Gaston or Gastoune there in 1652 (RRM, I, p. 65, 72). Agnes Gastoun in Melrose was accused of witchcraft in 1650 (ibid, I, p. 220). A form of Gascon, 'a native of Gascony,' and Bardsley mentions a person in the reign of Henry III who is referred to as de Gasconia and de Gaston."
