(Note: In the 1860 Census of Harrison County, George Earnest, 27, gunsmith, was enumerated in the household of Elizabeth Pritchard Lowther, widow of John C. Lowther. This was the George H. Ernest (1832-1905) who moved to Ohio, married Louisa Bevitt and is buried at Ferncliff Cemetery in Springfield, Ohio. It is likely, but not proven, that William and George Earnest were closely related. The 1860 Federal Census Slave Schedule for Doddridge County, enumerated on Jun 1 1860, contains the following entry: Slave owner: W. H. Earnest. Description of slave: Mulatto female, age 6. 1870 Census, Wood Co, WV (City of Parkersburg), enumerated on Jul 27 1870: William H. Ernest, 40, gunsmith; Virginia, 35; Georgia, 15; David, 14; John, 11; George, 7; Florida, 5; William, 1 month (birth month May); Hannah Jaques, 22, occupation sewing. 1880 Census, Wood Co, WV (City of Parkersburg), enumerated on Jun 21 1880: Wm. H. Ernest, 46, gunsmith; wife Virginia, 45; son David, 21, railroad laborer; son John, 17; son George, 12; son Wm. H. Jr, 10; dau Florida, 11; dau Laura, 8; son Daniel R, 5. For the elder William, the column was checked to indicate "Maimed, Crippled, Bedridden or Otherwise disabled."
