  • Notes 
    • Phineas Chapin's wife Nancy Sommerville died in August 1843. On Dec 31 1849, Phineas married Jennet Fleming Roy, widow of Thomas Roy. Her son William Roy was with them in the Chapin household in the 1850 Census.

      1850 Census, Harrison Co, Virginia (now West Virginia), 21st District, enumerated on Sep 20 1850:
      Phineas Chapin, 55, b. Massachusetts, clerk, value of real estate $2,000; Jennet, 50, b. England; Virginius P, 24, b. Va, value of real estate $1,000; Mary N.M.M., 20, b. Va, value of real estate $1,200; Ruhama P, 19, b. Va, value of real estate $1,250; Elizabeth S, 18, b. Va, attended school within the year; Sophronia, 17, b. Va, attended school; Caroline, 15, b. Va, attended school; William Roy, 19, b. Canada.
      NOTE: The next enumerated household on one side was that of Aaron Criss (39, b. Va, merchant, value of real estate $4,500) and his wife Jane. The household on the other siede was that of Benjamin Dolbeare (60, b. Connecticut, physician). It is known from other records that Phineas Chapin's home was on West Main Street in Clarksburg.

      Following Phineas Chapin's 1857 death, Jennet and her son William Roy moved to Olathe, Kansas, where they were found in the 1860 Census.
