This is quite possible, and is presented thus in "History of Doddridge County," p. 234. But records show that he was known as Joseph Henry Schmidt (Smith), with nothing to indicate that he may also have been known as Johann or John. In all census records, he is identified as Henry Smith, J. H. Smith or J. Henry Smith, and she is always identified as Margaret. In the marriage and death records of their children, he is identified as Henry or Joseph Henry, and she as Margaret.
