Aug 1855, married 24 yrs, no children; nephew John E. Swiger, 17, b. Oct 1882, single, coal miner; niece Nellie P. Swiger, 13, b. Mar 1887. NOTE: John E. Swiger was more commonly known as John Albert Swiger or J. Albert Swiger or Albert J. Swiger. His obituary stated that he was a son of Sylvester Swiger. Based on his relationshiop given in this census as nephew, and the fact that Sylvester's wife Margaret is documented as having had no children, it appears that J. Albert Swiger may have been Sylvester's adopted son or foster son. Or perhaps he really was Sylvester or Margaret's nephew. We have found no birth record or other evidence of J. Albert Swiger's natural parents. Likewise, we have found no record of Nellie P. Swiger other than this census and an entry in the 1907 Fairmont City Directory, in which she was listed as a teacher boarding with Sylvester and Margaret. The two children, John E. (J. Albert) and Nellie P., were presumably siblings. 1910 Census, Marion Co, WV (City of Fairmont), enumerated on May 7 1910: Sylvester Swiger, 55, house tender, married 34 yrs; wife Margaret, 54, married 34 yrs, no children; adopted son Charles Merrifield, 4.
