A transcription of the handwritten petition is as follows, with minor corrections to spelling and punctuation for ease of understanding:

To the General Assembly of Virginia:

We the undersigned inhabitants of Middle Island in Harrison County -- and in the District of a Separate Election to be held at the house of Simeon Maxsons by an act passed in the Legislature 1828, and the people of Middle Island being acquainted with the outlines of the District of said Separate Election -- believe that Maxsons is not near the Center. Wherefore we, your humble petitioners, do pray the Legislature will move the place for holding the Separate Election from Simeon Maxsons to Lewisport or near it, as we believe it will be much convenienter for the settlement, and as in duty bound we will ever pray. ## Capt Davis will be a convenient place.
