    She was born to her mother, Rachel Lowther, before the marriage to her stepfather William Reed. Her natural father was Elmore Burton. She thus was born Sarah Columbia Lowther, but assumed the name Reed of her stepfather. [per daughter Maggie Husk Brannon] She was identified in daughter Bessie's obituary, however, as Sarah Burton, and in husband's death certificate as Sarah Lowther.

    Son George Washington Husk's death record identifies his father's birthplace as Pennsylvania, and daughter Martha's death record states father's birthplace as Greene Co, PA. But 1850 Census of Greene Co, Pa. gives his birthplace as Virginia, while all other family members are shown as being born in Pennsylvania. The 1900 Census of Doddridge County states his birth date as March 1819.

    Notes:

    Some question exists as to her correct first name. Although widely believed to have been Sarah, evidence seems more to indicate Elizabeth. In either event, she was known almost exclusively only by her middle name, Jane. Her name was given as Jane in the 1870 Census, and even her headstone identifies her only as "Jane, wife of Isaac Husk." The death record of Isaac Newton Husk incorrectly lists his parents as Isaac Husk and Jane Whetlatch [sic], confusing his mother with his grandmother, Sarah Whitlatch.

    In the 1900 Census of Doddridge County, Isaac Husk was listed in the household of son George and was described as 81, b. Mar 1819 in Pa, father b. in (blank), mother b. in Pa, widowed.

    The exact history of the original charcoal of the widely-distributed formal portrait of the elderly Isaac Husk has not been determined. However, it is known that it was handed down to his grandson Walter "Shiner" Husk. Per Shiner's instructions, upon his death in 1993, it was in turn passed down to Isaac's great-grandson Samuel D. Gaston. Following Sam's death in 2012, it was handed down to his nephew and Isaac's g-g-grandson, Renee L. Brown, with whom Sam had collaborated on this genealogy for so many years.

There is speculation that this may be the Robert Lowther who some researchers include in the family of Thomas Lowther (1767-1816) and Mary Coburn.     "Frederick Husk (or Hust) apparently settled near the mouth of Dolls Run [in what is now the north central part of West Virginia]. In some old deeds, that stream is called Hust's Run, but the family long ago passed out of the community, and even the name applied to the stream did not stick. The last property passed out of the hands of the family on June 6, 1846, when Elizabeth Husk, widow of Samuel Husk, and the other heirs, Frederick Husk and Nancy his wife, Isaac Husk and Jane his wife, George Britton and Mary his wife, Samuel Husk and Dorcas his wife, Horatio Britton and Elizabeth his wife, transferred 100 acres to Solomon Bowers."     On Mar 14 1796, Frederick Husk was a member of the jury of inquest (the first meeting of the court after the records were burned that year). [The Monongalia Story, Vol. II, p. 256]

    Although the following excerpt from the 1979 "History of Doddridge County," p. 247, states that Jonathan Spurgeon was born on Bear Fork, Doddridge County, documents and records of that time do not support that. He and his family were in Doddridge County at the time of the 1850 Census, but earlier records place them in Preston County. Jonathan's birthplace may have been in Preston County or somewhere in eastern Virginia, but it was not in present-day Doddridge County.

    "Johnithan (John) [Spurgeon], a frontiersman, was born on Bear Fork, Doddridge County. He located on Bull Run, near Masontown, Preston County. He had 6 boys and 3 girls. They moved from Bull Run to Tom's Fork, Doddridge County in the Pearcy Settlement. From there he came back to Bear Fork of Cove Creek where he resided until his death and was buried in the Boyce Cemetery (located on the Frank Schulte farm on Bear Fork) and was the first to be buried there, he and his wife. Their children were Phillip, Jesse, George, John, James and Jeremiah, sons, and Cathryn, Rachael and Mary Ann, the daughters."
