    Notes:

    Nancy Britton, daughter of Andrew Osborne Britton and Mahala McIntire, was the sixth of eleven children. Her nine brothers were John, Albert, Francis, Willie, Goff, Ira, Robert, Poling, and Arthur. Her one sister was Jennie. In 1876, Andrew Osborne Britton bought a 79 acre farm on Ellis Fork, Tanner's Creek, and in 1879 he bought 269 acres on Tanner's Fork. He and Mahala spent the rest of their lives in the area of Newberne on Tanner's Creek.

    "On July 13, 1888 the Doddridge County Court ordered that G. W. Ice be appointed a commissioner to supply specifications for a bridge to span the Middle Fork of McElroy Creek in the McClellan District. Ice was also ordered to advertise and let out the contract for building the bridge and to superintend the construction. The records indicate that T. W. Ancell and E. Underwood built abutments and John Ash and S. H. Smith built superstructures for at least two bridges in the McClellan District."

    Birth date 5 March 1820 on his headstone is inconsistent with other records. His age in the 1850 Census would put his birth in about 1825, and age 75 in his 1897 marriage record puts it in about 1822, while the 1900 Census indicates April 1815.

All other surnames are indicated by the use of ditto marks. Positioning of those ditto marks in this entry incorrectly implies that the surname of the four youngest children was Hiley. Examination of other records leads to the conclusion that the three youngest children should have been listed with the surname Carroll, as they were Samuel and Nancy's grandchildren, illegitimate children of three of their daughters. This is based on the following observations:
    LOUISA (1841-1923) was the daughter of Elizabeth Carroll, according to her marriage record. She later was known as Louisa Jane Ice, taking the surname of her stepfather Isaac Ice. Elizabeth and Isaac Ice were already married prior to this census, and they were enumerated together in another household with their two children. We can only speculate why Louisa was not brought into their household.
    LUCY (1847-1913) was the daughter of Mary Carroll. She was still known as Lucy Carroll in the 1880 Census, when she was listed as a stepdaughter of Mary's husband John W. Beverlin. When she married William Hugill in 1891, however, she was identified as Lucy Beverlin.
    SANFORD (1849-1936) was the son of Sarah Carroll, according to his death record. He was later known as William Sanford Lowe, taking the surname of Sarah's husband William Lowe.
    SAMUEL HILEY - Exact identity and relationship to this family have not been determined.
