GENEALOGY

Generation One
1. Peter B.
Haught, census name Peter B. Haut,[1] b.
Sep- -1809,[2] [In
the1920 Census, son David Haught stated his father's birthplace as Pennsylvania
and his mother's as West Virginia; but in the several censuses that included
Peter B. Haught himself, he provided his own birthplace as Virginia. This is likely in present-day West Virginia,
probably Monongalia County near the Pennsylvania border.], d. Jun-14-1883 in
Doddridge Co, WV,[3]

census 1880 in West Union District, Doddridge Co, WV, census 1870 in Southwest
District, Doddridge Co, WV, census 1860 in Doddridge Co, (W)VA, census 1850 in
Barbour Co, (W)VA, census 1840 in Monongalia Co, (W)VA, occupation farmer,1,[5],[6],[7]
military Jan- -1863 - Apr-23-1864 Pvt,
Co B, W.Va. Independent Exempt Inf, Civil War,[8],[9],[10]
[The 1890 Veterans Schedule entry for Peter B. Haught, which was based solely
on information provided by his widow Bashaba, indicated that he had served for
1 yr 5 mo, with a discharge date of June 1865.
But monthly company muster rolls completed at the time of his service
clearly show that he enlisted in Doddridge County for a period of three years
on Dec 8 1862 with a muster-in date of Jan 9 1863 at Wheeling, and that he was
mustered out in Wheeling on Apr 23 1864.
His length of service thus corresponds to the 1890 Veterans Schedule,
but with different dates. He seems to
have understated his age by ten years during his military service. The two companies of the W.Va. Independent
Exempt Infantry were stationed at Wheeling, the state capital, to perform guard
and escort duties.].
Peter B.
Haught, presumably a descendant of Paul Haught of Holland, came into Monongalia
Co, (W)VA, from Fayette Co, PA, and purchased a farm of 117 acres, on Statler's
Run, on Sep 28, 1837. In 1845 he sold
this land and lived in Greene Co, PA, for a short time, later relocating to
Doddridge County, West Virginia, near the Ritchie County line. As explained below, his exact parentage has
not been definitively determined.
According to the 1948 W. B. Haught
genealogy, Peter Haught I was born in Rotterdam, Holland in 1720. He married there in about 1747 and sailed
from there on the ship Patience, landing at Philadelphia on Sep 9, 1751, with
his wife and daughter Elizabeth.
Sometime prior to 1755, he settled near the present town of Moorefield,
in what is now Hardy County, WV. His
son, Peter Haught II, was born in the South Branch valley on July 1, 1755. (This is presumably the Peter Haut, age 95,
listed in the 1850 Census of Monongalia County, along with six other household
members.) Peter Haught I had another
son by a second wife in 1790.
Peter Haught I had three brothers who also
came to America: (1) Tobias Haught, who
never married; (2) Henry Haught, who had sons John, Nicholas and Peter, the
latter killed at Fort Meigs on Feb 23, 1813; and (3) Paul Haught, who is
thought to be the ancestor of the Peter B. Haught (1809-1883) of this
genealogy.
Paul Haught came to Statler's Run in 1776
and marked a settlement right on a tract of land near the location of his
nephew, Peter Haught II, and Richard Tennant.
There is no evidence of Paul's return to this settlement right, but two
of his sons, John and Jacob, came and claimed the land as heirs of Paul Haught,
and had it surveyed on April 6, 1785.
Their patent on this tract of 324 acres is dated Oct 25, 1792. On April 4, 1800, they sold 169 acres of the
tract to Peter Tennant (son-in-law of Peter Haught I), and on Oct 8, 1804, they
sold the remaining 155 acres to Samuel Varner.
John Haught and his wife Catherine acknowledged the deed in Monongalia
County, while Jacob Haught and his wife Magdaline (Croushour) Haught
acknowledged in Fayette Co, PA. John
Haught lived in Monongalia County for a few years, owning land on Days Run, and
on Dunkard Creek, near Blacksville. His
deed for the Dunkard Creek land, to John Johnson, is dated Aug 2, 1806. He moved to Fayette Co, PA. Amos Haught, apparently another son of Paul
Haught, was assistant to Samuel Hanway, Surveyor of Monongalia Co, and made two
surveys of farm lands in November 1783.
Peter Haught, who purchased land on Sandy Creek on March 7, 1815, must
have been another son of Paul Haught, as both Peter Haught I and his brother
Henry had sons whom they named Peter.
[Haught, W. B., "Genealogy of the Haught Family of America,"
1948, pp 1, 112 and 165]
Monongalia County marriage records show a
marriage between Peter Haught and Elizabeth Jenkins on Aug 16 1803. A marriage bond was issued in Monongalia Co
(W)VA on Jan 1 1838 for Peter Hought, Jr. and Rachel Wilson, daughter of
William Wilson. The spelling Hought is
presumably a variation or misspelling of Haught. ["Daughters of the American Revolution
Magazine," Vol 64, No. 11, Nov 1930, p. 705]
Adding to the confusion of the many Peter
Haughts in that region at that time is this entry from "Chronicles of
Core," p. 5: "Certificates
granted by the commissioners for adjusting the claims to unpatented lands on
the westernwaters for the county of Monongalia in February, March and April
1781 include the following .... Peter
Haught, Senior, 400 acres on Statlers Run, adjoining lands of Henry Smith, to
include his improvement made in 1776."
Core also makes reference (p. 6) to Richard Tennant, "the ancestor
of a very large and important family still living in Monongalia country, came
from Glasgow, Scotland, about 1760, selling his time for seven years to pay his
passage. About 1769 he married Elizabeth
Haught, who was of German descent, at Moorefield, Hardy County, Va.... after serving in the Revolutionary War for a
time, came and settled on Jake Statlers Run.
His brother-in-law, Peter Haught, came with him." [Core cites Wiley, in "History of
Monongalia County, p. 26]
Another Elizabeth Haught of that time is
also cited by Core (p. 45):
"Elizabeth Piles (nee Haught) died March 18, 1834, aged 49 years, 6
months, and 27 days, and was buried in the Price Cemetery. She was the wife of John Piles, son of
Zechariah Piles by his second wife, Susannah." Her age at death would put her birthdate at
Aug 19 1784.
Very near the grave of Peter B. Haught is a
marker for Nancy L. (Postlewait) Britton, who was born about 1853 in Ritchie
County, a daughter of Isaac & Mary Ann (Haught) Postleweight. Mary Ann Haught was born about 1819 in
Pennsylvania, parents not known, but thought to be George & Jane (Provence)
Haught. But the proximity of her
daughter's grave to that of Peter B. Haught would suggest a close relationship,
perhaps siblings.
Other researchers have reported the parents
of Peter B. Haught variously as [1] Jacob Haught (1767-ca 1849) & Magdalena
Croushour (1767-1815), [2] Johan (or John) Peter Haught (ca 1786 - ca 1844)
& Sarah Sally Carver (1794-1843), and [3] Paul Haught & unknown. For ourselves, until a definitive connection
surfaces, the parents of Peter B. Haught must remain an unsolved mystery.[11],[12],[13]
Married in Mt. Morris, Greene Co, PA, Bashaba Musgrave, b. May-28-1811 in Monongalia Co, (W)VA,4
(daughter of David B. Musgrave and Mary E. "Polly" Jones), d. Sep- 2-1898,4 buried in Cabin Run
Cemetery, Doddridge Co, WV.4
Bashaba: Spelling of name appears in
various forms as Bashaba (headstone), Barsheba (father's will), Bathsheba (1870
Census), Basheba, etc. Birthplace
possibly Buckhannon, Upshur Co, WV.
1840 Census, Monongalia Co, Virginia (now
West Virginia):
Household of Peter B. Haut:
1 male, age 30-40
1 female, age 30-40
(Note:
If this is the correct household, daughter Mariah in not accounted
for. See below.)
The adjacent household was that of Peter
Haut:
1 male, age 80-90; 1 male, age 15-20; 2
males, age age 10-15
1 female, age 30-40; 1 female, age under 5
A nearby household was that of Jacob Haut:
1 male, age 20-30; 1 male, age 5-10
1 female, age 30-40; 1 female, age 5-10; 1
female, age under 5
Another household in the vicinity was that
of Peter Haut:
1 male, age 20-30; 2 males, age under 5
1 female, age 20-30; 2 females, age 5-10
Yet another household in the vicinity was
that of another Peter Haut:
1 male, age 20-30
1 female, age 20-20;
1 female, age under 5
(Note:
Other than the lack of middle initial, this could be the Peter B. Haught
of this genealogy, as it would account for daughter Mariah. Taking all factors into account, our
conclusion is that this is indeed the Peter Haught in question.)

Generation Two
2. Mariah Jane Haught,[14]
b. 1834 in Monongalia Co, (W)VA,[15],1,6,[16]
[Age 38 at time of 1877 marriage would put birth in about 1839, and 1900 Census
states birth date as Jun 1840. But age
15 at 1850 Census and age 35 at 1870 Census would put birth in about 1835. Her obituary states her birth date simply as
1834, as does her headstone. While her
marriage record indicates birthplace as Monongalia County, her obituary states
the neighboring Greene County, Pennsylvania.
The border between the two counties was inexact and changing at that
time, and it is not unusual to have both counties reported as a birthplace.],

putting birth in about 1779, while age in 1860 was just as clearly 73, putting

Mary: Identified in her marriage record as
Mary A. Gaston and in her obituary as Mary A. Haught, daughter of John H.
Gaston and Jane Pritchard Gaston. Basis
for middle initial "A" is not known, as her middle name has been
determined to be Martha and her headstone clearly identifies her as Mary
M. Conversely, the obituary of her son
Marvel L. Haught identifies her as Mary Ellen Gaston, and she appears in the
1850 Census as Mary E. Gaston, age 6 months.
Her own obituary reads in part: "Mrs. Haught was born and reared and
spent her entire long and useful life on the same farm in South West
District. She was well known to many of
the citizens of Doddridge County and was loved and revered by all who knew
her; she was always kind and generous to
the poor and was always attentive and helpful to the citizens of her community
in times of sickness and distress. She
lived a useful life, retaining her memory and optimism of life until a few days
before she was called. When her life's
work was finished, she fell asleep, assuring her relatives and friends that she
was prepared to the change and that all was well with her."

Doddridge Co birth records (Book 3, Page

lodger in the household of Jacob M. Osborn, and in 1930 as a boarder in the
home of Jacob's widow Annetta on Lower Run Road.].
Freda:
Identified in obituaries of E. Wilson Osborne and W. Frank Osborne as Mrs.
Freda Haught of Akron, a surviving sister.
But she was identified in obituary of Frank's sister Rella Osborne
Snider as Mrs. Harry (Freda) Haught of Akron, a surviving foster sister, and
she was identified in obituary of Annetta "Nettie" Cole Osburn as
Mrs. Harry (Freda) Haught of Akron, a surviving foster daughter. It would thus appear that Freda, whose mother
died in 1919 when Freda was just 4, was raised in the family of Jacob M. and
Annetta "Nettie" Cole Osburn.
She was listed in their household as a lodger in the 1920 Census. Relationship between the Davis/Britton and
Osborne/Cole families, if any, is not known.
Confusingly, the obituary of her foster sister, Mary Osborne Gaston,
states that she was predeceased by "three sisters, Rella Snider, Freda
Haught and Freda Osborne." No birth
record for Freda Davis was found in Doddridge County.

Dear
Aunt,
After
a long time of delay, I will now answer your letter received back in the States. This leaves me feeling fine, am in good
health and sincerely hope for this to find each of you well and enjoying life.
Well,
this is certainly a grand country with all its beauty, and my but there are
lots of pretty girls here. But I have
one back in the States awaiting on me, so I don't try to get acquainted with
them here.
This
has been a nice bright sunshiny Sabbath, and I have written the most of the
day.
Has
Chauncey Riddle returned back home yet?
How
is business around town?
How
is Brown's health? Is he as fat as
ever? Tell him I am as I ever was, that
Army life hasn't learnt me any bad habits yet and I expect to be the same as
long as I live. Tell him hello for me
and I hope to see him in the near future.
How
are the children?
Well,
Babe, don't wait too long to answer. So
with love, best wishes to all, I will close.

resided (nursing home) in Coshocton, Coshocton Co, OH,48,[357]
resided formerly in Youngstown, Mahoning Co, OH,48,193 resided
originally in West Union, Doddridge Co, WV.48 Nancy was always sensitive about her age, and
no one in the family was ever sure exactly when she was born. The official Jan 19 1884 birth date was
provided at the time of the delayed recording of her birth record in 1944 and
was based principally on the testimony of her sister Rosa. Age 23 given at time of Dec 1910 marriage
would put birth date in 1887, as would age 43 in the 1930 Census. The SSDI reports her birth date as Jan 19
1885, while her headstone shows her birth date as Jan 19 1889, also
incorrect. A birth date of Jan 1882 was
given in the 1900 Census, correctly placing her between older sister Icy Dell
(listed as b. Jul 1880) and younger brother John Homer (b. Nov 1883). An analysis of the 1900 Census data for that
household leads to the conclusion that Nancy and siblings Elizabeth, Icy &
Homer seem to have shifted their birthdates in later years to make themselves
appear a few years younger than they were.
In Nancy's case, the shift seems to have occurred at about the time of
the 1910 Census (when she was listed as being only 4 years older than in the
1900 Census), as her given age stayed fairly consistent after that. In the end, although we list her birth date
as January 1884 to conform with her official birth record, the likelihood is that she was actually born
in January 1882 as indicated in the 1900 Census. Married Dec-20-1910 in West
Union, Doddridge Co, WV,[358],[359]

Addison: Born in Minnesota in 1881,
Addison Brown moved from there to the state of
Washington with his father in June 1893.
Federal Census data of Jun 5 1900 identifies Addison Y. [sic] Brown, age
19, residing in Satsop, Chehalis County (now known as Grays Harbor County),
Washington as a servant and farm laborer in the household of Edward F. Foster,
b. Aug 1862 in Idaho. Addison's
birthdate was given as Aug 1880 [sic], birthplace Minnesota, father's birthplace
Massachusetts, mother's birthplace New York.
Edward Foster's wife Mary was shown as born in Apr 1864 in West
Virginia. The Fosters' neighbors were
the family of Jasper and Virginia Mowry; they and the oldest five of their
seven children were born in West Virginia, the younger two born in
Washington. We can only speculate that
it was through the Fosters and/or the Mowrys that Addison was somehow
introduced to Nancy "Babe" Haught and eventually came to West
Virginia. This is supported by the fact
that Jasper Mowry appeared in the 1870 Census of Doddridge County (New Milton
Twp) as the 9-year-old son of George & Mary Mowry, and that Jasper N. Mowry
& Jennie (nickname for Virginia) Knight were married in Doddridge County on
Mar 10 1856.
Census data of April 19 1910 states that
Addison Brown was a 28-year-old laborer living in Montesano Precinct, County of
Chehalis (now Grays Harbor County), Washington, with place of birth as
Minnesota in 1881, residing as a "hired man" in the household of John
C. Smith (age 52, born in Wisconsin) and his wife of 27 years, Jennie C. (age
47, born in West Virginia), and their children.
Addison must have come to West Virginia soon thereafter, as he and Nancy
"Babe" Haught were married Dec 20 1910 in West Union, and daughter
Waneta was born Oct 23, 1911.
1920 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (West Union
District), enumerated on Jan 3 1920 at 111 Wabash Avenue:
A. A. Brown, 38, b. Minnesota, both
parents b. Minnesota, occupation truck-dray driver; wife Babe Brown, 33;
step-dau Clella Haught, 15; dau Jaunita Brown, 8; son Vernon A. Brown, 2
months.
Stated birthplace of Addison's parents is
clearly in error.
1930 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (West Union
District), enumerated on Apr 14 1930 (location appears to be one of several
households at 317 E. Main St.):
Addison A. Brown, 47, b. Minnesota, both
parents b. Minnesota, occupation salesman at feed store, age 26 at first
marriage; wife Babe, 43, age 22 at first marriage, b. WV, father b. Pa., mother
b. WV; dau Mabel W, 18; son Vernon A, 10; son Armond L, 7.
Again, the stated birthplace of Addison's
parents is in error. Daughter Mabel W.
Brown was better known as Waneta Brown; with her name appearing as Juanita
Brown, she had been enumerated a week earlier in Harrison County in the
household of half-sister and brother-in-law Clella and Lawrence Ingram.
1940 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (Town of
West Union), enumerated on Apr 29 1940 at 304 Cottage Ave:
A. A. Brown, 59, b. Minnesota, laborer;
wife Babe, 52, b. WVa; son Vernon, 20, single, laborer at cleaning &
pressing shop; son Armand, 17.
(Note: It is known from immediate
family that in 1940 Addison Brown was employed as a delivery truck driver for
the L. A. Hess Transfer Company of Fairmont, WV.)
In an affidavit dated Aug 21 1935 at
Clarksburg WV, regarding establishment of Addison's birthdate, Addison stated
that his family had moved to Montesano, Washington when he was about nine years
old, that the family Bible had been destroyed in a house fire about three years
later, that his mother had died when he was about six years old, that his
father had died when he was about 18 years old, and that he had no living
siblings.
Addison always told his son Armand that
his only living relative not descended from him was a cousin, Edith Maria
Weeden, whose address was 10 Guernsey Street, Norwich (Chenango County),
NY. We have since determined that Edith
Weeden was the wife of Archer Lewis Weeden (b. Mar 18 1870) (married May 20
1891) and was born Edith Maria Terwilliger in New York on Feb 13 1873, daughter
of Andrew Jackson Terwilliger (1829-1904) and Mary Esther Sanders (1842-1919)
(married Dec 12 1871). Census data shows
that Mary Esther Sanders was a sister of Almira Sanders, Addison's mother. It was Edith Maria Weeden who in January 1943
provided an affidavit supporting the filing of Addison's delayed birth
certificate in Verndale, Wadena County, Minnesota.

including doing custodial work at the West Union Post Office and pumping gas at
the local filling station. After his
1941 graduation from Doddridge County High School, he worked at the A&P
grocery store at the end of Main Street near the court house. He had a knack for working with fresh
produce, much of which was displayed outside the store to attract
customers. One person it attracted was a
pretty teenager who walked by every morning on her way to school. Armand happened to be watching one day and
saw her grab an apple and continue on her way.
He rushed out of the store and demanded that she either return the apple
or pay for it. We don't know what she
ended up doing, because at this point in telling the story, Armand would always
say "And that's how I met my wife.
I caught her stealing apples."
That teenage girl was Geneva Gaston, and they married a few years
later. Although it was never made clear
in the telling of the story, there's little doubt that far from being an apple
thief, Geneva was simply trying to get the attention of someone special.
Married Aug-4-1946 in West Union, Doddridge Co, WV,[382]

Geneva:
Graduate of Doddridge County High School (1945) and attended Salem College,
Salem, WV, 1945-46. Worked for two years
in the office of the Ford garage in West Union.
Upon her marriage to Armand Brown in 1946, she moved to Youngstown,
Ohio, where Armand's family had moved from West Union while he was overseas
during World War II. From 1962 to 1974,
she worked as cashier and office worker for A&P food stores in Youngstown
and vicinity. In June 1974, with Armand's
heart problems preventing him from continuing his job with A&P in
Youngstown, they returned to Doddridge County, moving into the house on Oxford
Road, at Cabin Run, where Geneva had lived with her family for about five years
prior to her marriage. From then until
his death in 1985, Armand and Geneva operated what had been her parents' small
grocery store adjacent to the family home, changing the name from Gaston's
Grocery to Brown's Grocery. With her
brother Sam, Geneva was a driving force and principal compiler of this
genealogy.

[32] Doddridge County Marriage Records, West Union, WV, There are two entries for this marriage: MR Bk 1-B, p. 21, shows that the marriage license was filed/issued on Jan 4 1858. MR Bk 1-A, p. 122, shows that the marriage occurred in Doddridge Co on Jan 5 1858. At first glance, the latter entry looks like July 5 1858, but closer examination of the elegant handwritten entry reveals that what appears to be "July" is actually "Jany," the common abbreviation for January in those days.

Haught, age 78y 7m 18d, dying Dec 28 1924 at Summers of old age. The latter appears to be the more accurate and is the basis for his birthdate of May 10 1846. The Dec 28 1924 date is also given for his death in the obituary of his wife. His headstone gives only the years 1846 and 1924. Birthplace given in death record as Greene Co, PA. DR 4-81 & 2-64A.

Parents identified as Peter Haught (b. in Pennsylvania) and Basheba Musgrave (b. in West Virginia). Handwritten entry gives date of birth as 5/14/1843, but age at death (79y, 6m, 25d) puts birth at 5/14/1848, which coincides with other sources. Cause of death listed as pulmonary tuberculosis. Smith. (BR Bk 1, p. 26; http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=2608619&Type=Birth)
This birth record is a ledger-style typewritten log, transcribed from
the original handwritten log, and appears to pertain to the same child recorded
a few pages later in the same log and identified as Sarah M. Smith, white
female, born alive on Nov 24 1866, dau of James W. & Elmina E. Smith. (BR Bk 1, p. 31;
http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=2608371&Type=Birth)
This would also appear to be the Sarah Melissa Smith who married James Reed and whose birth date was given in the 1900 Census as Nov 1865 and in her death record as Nov 4 (sic) 1865. The 1870 Census of her family contained an entry for Sarah M. Smith, age 4, but not for a sibling within one year's age. It is concluded that the transcription process resulted not only in the same birth being record twice, but also in both entries being incorrect in different ways, and that the child in question was Sarah Melissa Smith, born Nov 24 1865.

[135] Findagrave.com (http://www.findagrave.com), There are several discrepancies on this headstone, the name on which is "F. E., Wife of A. J. Martin." The inscribed birth date is May 28 1868, but the date in her birth record is Apr 25 1868. The inscribed age, 28y 8m 3d, computes to a birth date of May 29 1866, corresponding to neither of the foregoing dates. It should be noted, however, that the ledger-style birth record is a typed transcription of the original, leaving open the possibility of a clerical error. Photo by Barbara Nicholson.

[326] Doddridge County Death Records, West Union, WV, Age 53 given at time of marriage in 1930 would put birth at about 1877, but this is at variance with all other information. Immediate family members have given her birthdate as Mar 4 1874, but this is also apparently incorrect. Her birthdate is stated as Mar 4 1875 in death record and obituary, and that conforms to the 1875 date on her headstone. Age 92 stated in obituary is in error, as it conflicts with the other dates given there. No birth record for her was found in Doddridge County. DR Bk 5, p. 20-A.

Although a birth date of Dec 1 1881 is given on both her death record and funeral card and was apparently widely used by her, her appearance as a one-year-old daughter in the 1880 Census makes that an impossibility. Also, the 1900 Census states her birth date as Dec 1878. BR Bk 1, p. 95.
