BROWN  GENEALOGY

Generation One

1.    Benjamin Brown, d. bef 1741 in Connecticut.

The parentage of Benjamin Brown, husband of Abigail Cleveland (and father of Benjamin Brown (b. ca 1733) who married Hannah Benjamin), has not been determined.  His name is known only from a reference in "The Benjamin Family in America," p. 113, wherein the husband of Hannah Benjamin is identified as "Benjamin Brown, the son of Benjamin and Abigail (Cleveland) Brown."  He is presumed to have died in Connecticut before 1741, since Abigail's first child by her second husband was born in November of that year.

Although quite possible, it would be only speculation to suggest that this is the Benjamin Brown widely reported as the son of Deacon Thomas Brown and the father of Rufus Brown.  If any reader of this genealogy has information which would support or disprove this possibility, please let us know.

He married[1] Abigail Cleveland, also known as Abigail Cleaveland,[2] b. Jun- 3-1715 in Canterbury, Windham Co, CT,2 (daughter of Josiah Cleaveland and Abigail Paine), d. Dec-15-1782 in Canterbury, Windham Co, CT,[3],[4] [at homestead, North Society], buried Morse Cemetery in Canterbury, Windham Co, CT.[5]

Abigail: The precise year of Abigail Cleveland's second marriage, to John Adams, is not clear.  Genealogist Andrew N. Adams reports a date of 1733, when her son Benjamin Brown was not more that one year of age.  But Canterbury town records show that the first of Abigail and John Adams'  nine children was not born until November 1741.

In 1746 John Adams and his wife participated in the formation of the Separatist Church in Canterbury, which gave rise to much dissension in that village.  John Adams was made a member of the early church in 1741, and his wife Abigail in 1745.

On Apr 17 1752, John and Abigail Adams acknowledged receipt of a legacy from the estate of her father, Josiah Cleveland of Canterbury, which had been bequeathed to them in a clause in his will of Dec 28 1750, in which Josiah Cleveland mentions his daughter Abigail Adams and his grandson Benjamin Brown.

John Adams' will was drawn on May 4 1762, and the estate was administered that same year.  In it he mentions wife Abigail Adams.  Mrs. Abigail Adams' estate was administered Feb 19 1783, and mention is made of her "eldest son Benjamin Brown."

According to an article by genealogist Emily Wilder Leavitt of Boston, written in the "New England Historical & Genealogical Register" in 1894, in "a little graveyard in the northern part of Canterbury the tombstones of both John and Abigail Adams have recently been found:  'Here lies the body of Mr. John Adams who died January 16, 1762-3, in his 66th year.'  On that of his wife is inscribed:  'Here lies the body of Mrs. Abigail, wife of Mr. John Adams who died December 15, 1782.'"

Abigail's brother Aaron was the father of Moses Cleaveland, the founder of Cleveland, Ohio.4

                                      Children:

                2.          i.       BENJAMIN BROWN b. Apr-  -1732/33.

Generation Two

2.    Benjamin Brown (1.Benjamin1), b. Apr-  -1732/33 in Canterbury, Windham Co, CT,1 d. Jan- 1-1792 in Canterbury, Windham Co, CT,1,[6],[7] military Patriotic Service in Revolutionary War in Connecticut.[8]

Many researchers report that this Benjamin Brown (father of Rufus and 16 others) was born on Sep 1 1713 in Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut, a son of Deacon Thomas  Brown and Rachel Leavens, and died on Nov 17 1773.  But we have not found original documentation for this, and it is contradicted by (1) the birth of four of Benjamin's children after 1773, (2) Benjamin Brown's entry in the DAR Patriot Index, (3) Benjamin Brown's will (a copy of which is in our possession) dated 1791 and proved in 1792, (4) the estate of Abigail Cleveland Brown Adams, administered in 1782, which mentions her "eldest son Benjamin Brown," and (5) the will of Josiah Cleaveland identifying Benjamin Brown as his grandson.

The entry for Benjamin Brown, Patriot Ancestor #A015287, in the DAR Patriot Index reads as follows:

Benjamin Brown, born about 1734 in England, died 1792 in Connecticut, married Hannah Benjamin, Patriotic Service in Connecticut.

The England birthplace indicated by the DAR is inconsistent with all other references to this Benjamin Brown and is considered suspect.  Correspondence with the DAR revealed no basis for assigning the England birthplace, which was apparently the result of conjecture on the part of a DAR applicant.  This appears to be the same Benjamin Brown mentioned in "The Benjamin Family in America," p. 113, wherein the husband of Hannah Benjamin is identified as Benjamin Brown (son of Benjamin Brown and Abigail Cleveland), born ca Apr 1732/33 at Canterbury, died Jan 1 1792 at Canterbury.  Benjamin Brown was living in the house of his maternal grandfather, Josiah Cleveland, at the time of the latter's death.  In 1751 Benjamin was called "the minor son of Mrs. Abigail Adams" and in her will was called "eldest son."  (Abigail Cleveland Brown had remarried John Adams sometime prior to Nov 1741, birth date of their first child.)  This would also be the same Benjamin Brown identified as a grandson in Josiah Cleaveland's will, extracts from which are found in "The Genealogy of the Cleveland and Cleaveland Families," pp. 81-82.

Adding to the confusion, there is a birth record for another Benjamin Brown, born May 30 1734 in Stonington, Connecticut, son of John Brown.  This appears not to be the Benjamin Brown of interest.  Based mainly on the birth records of other children, it is likely that there were two or more Benjamin Browns who were married to different Hannahs in that location and time frame.

All things considered, it appears certain that the Benjamin and Hannah of interest to us here were married in Canterbury on Feb 25 1755.  Further confirmation is found in Connecticut probate records, which show that the will of Benjamin Brown, husband of Hannah and father of Rufus and others known to be in this family, was dated Nov 28 1791 and proved on Feb 7 1792 in Canterbury, Plainfield District, Windham County.

Having thus established the parents of this Benjamin Brown as Benjamin Brown and Abigail Cleveland, we must wonder whether the aforementioned Deacon Thomas Brown and Rachel Leavens might actually be his grandparents.  Further investigation will be necessary to prove or disprove that possibility.1,[9],4

He married7 Feb-25-1755 in Canterbury, Windham Co, CT,1,[10] [at Canterbury Congregational Church], Hannah Benjamin, b. May-22-1737 in Preston, New London Co, CT,1 (daughter of Jedediah Benjamin and Patience Stanton), d.1 [Possibly in Brookfield, Vermont.].

                                      Children:

                             i.       BENJAMIN BROWN, JR. b. Jan- 1-1756 in Canterbury, Windham Co, CT.[11]  He married1 Dec-17-1779 in Canterbury, Windham Co, CT,[12] Esther Staples.

                3.          ii.      JEDEDIAH BROWN b. Mar-30-1757.

                4.          iii.     JOHN BROWN b. Aug-27-1758.

iv.     HUCHINSON BROWN, birth name Hucheson Brown,[13] b. Jan-16-1760 in Canterbury, Windham Co, CT,13 d. Sep- 7-1778 in Canterbury, Windham Co, CT.[14]

vii.    BILLESENT BROWN b. Sep-13-1764 in Canterbury, Windham Co, CT.16  She married[17] ___ Morse.

                5.          viii.   ARUNA BROWN b. Apr-21-1766.

ix.     HANNAH BROWN b. Nov- 5-1767 in Canterbury, Windham Co, CT,[18] ["Benjamin Family in America," p. 114, reports birth date as Apr 27 1769, but Connecticut Town Birth Records (Barbour Collection), show it as Nov 5 1767.].  She married17 ___ Morse.

                6.          x.      BIAL BROWN b. Apr-30-1770.

                7.          xi.     RUFUS BROWN b. Aug- 5-1771.

xii.    EBENEZER BROWN b. Feb- 7-1773 in Canterbury, Windham Co, CT,[19] d. bef 1819.17

                8.          xiii.   THANKFUL BROWN b. Dec-21-1774.

xiv.    PATIENCE BROWN b. Jun-11-1776 in Canterbury, Windham Co, CT.[20]

Other than her birth record, no reference to Patience Brown as a child of Benjamin Brown & Hannah Benjamin has been found.  Some versions of the Barbour Collection of Connecticut Vital Records report Jun 11 1776 as Patience's birth date, some report that as her death date, and some as both.  We consider it possible that Patience is the same person as Benjamin & Hannah's daughter Thankful, who married Jirah Peabody and for whom no birth record by that name has been found.  Thankful's age in the 1850 and 1860 censuses would put her birth in or about 1776.

                9.          xv.     AURELIA BROWN b. Aug-11-1778.

xvi.    ABIGAIL BROWN d. bef 1819.

No record of Abigail Brown's birth or death has been found, although she was included in the division of her father's estate in 1819 in the same manner as Benjamin's other known children.   Abigail's portion was designated to "the heirs of Abigail Rider."

                                      She married ___ Rider.

                19.        x.      GEORGE W. BROWN b. Mar-27-1817.

7.    Rufus Brown (2.Benjamin2, 1.Benjamin1), b. Aug- 5-1771 in Canterbury, Windham Co, CT,[32] d. Jul- 6-1838 in Otsego Co, NY,[33],[34] buried in Lull Cemetery, Otsego Co, NY,24 resided settled aft May 1813 in Otsego Co, NY.[35]

Rufus Brown left no will.  The only record found of his death is his headstone, the weathered inscription on which is reported by Findagrave.com as "In memory of RUFUS BROWN, who died July 6th 1832, aged 66 years."  But there appears to be an error in the transcription of the badly worn marker.  Given his documented Aug 1771 birth date, it is almost certain that either his age was other than 66, or that his death date was other than 1832, probably the latter.  If his age was in fact 66, his death date was probably 1838, or possibly 1839.  Support for this conclusion, as well as a record of his children's names, is found in Grantor Record Book 65, p. 413, Cooperstown NY, dated Feb 29 1840, in which the children of Rufus Brown signed a Conveyance-Indenture transferring ownership of his property to them.  This was presumably done as part of the settlement of Rufus' estate.  Thus, it is likely that Rufus had died sometime within the previous year or so, and that his wife had predeceased him.  His death was probably in Otsego County, his last known residence.

He married[36] May-16-1797 in Brooklyn, Windham Co, CT,[37],17 Mary Williams, b. May-  -1771 in Groton, New London Co, CT,33 [Birth date given in DAR Lineage Book as 1770.  But age 66 yr 8 mo on headstone calculates to a birth date of May 1771.] (daughter of William Williams and Martha Williams), d. Jan-12-1838 in Otsego Co, NY,33 buried in Lull Cemetery, Otsego Co, NY,24 [Inscription:  In Memory of Mrs. MARY, wife of Mr. RUFUS BROWN, who died January 12th, 1838, aged 66 years and 8 months.  Further inscription:  "Beloved by all her acquaintance and affectionate. Wife kind and tender mother discharging all the duties of life as become a woman of a christian supported by grace smiled In the C...... illegible....."  (Transcription and headstone photo by Bob Thomas, Findagrave.com volunteer.)].

Mary: Most of the information regarding Mary Williams and her immediate ancestors is from records of the DAR.

Some researchers have reported that she was born Jun 30 1771 in Roxbury, Suffolk Co, Massachusetts, died 1838; daughter of William Williams (son of William Williams & Sarah Stevens) and Martha Williams (dau of Samuel Williams & Theoda Parke).  This information has not been verified and is provided here only as a basis for further research.

Based on locations and ages, the following census records appear to pertain to the family of this Rufus Brown.

1810 Census, Brooklyn, Windham County, Connecticut:

No entry for this Rufus Brown was found in the 1820 Census.  There is a Rufus Brown and his family listed in that census in the town of Thompson in Windham County, but that was found through probate records to be a different Rufus Brown, who died in 1825 and whose wife was Huldah.

1830 Census, Pittsfield, Otsego Co, New York:

21.    Ammi Tufts Brown, birth name Amma Tufts Brown, census name Amina Brown,38 (7.Rufus3, 2.Benjamin2, 1.Benjamin1), b. Nov-22-1799 in Brooklyn, Windham Co, CT,[59],[60] d. btwn 1870 - 1874 in New York [Probable, but not confirmed.  The 1870 Census was the last record we have of Ammi T. Brown.  He did not appear with son Ammi A in the 1874-75 Elmira city directory, as he had in the  1869-70 Chenango County business directory.], census 1870 in Guilford, Chenango Co, NY, resided 1869 in New Berlin, Chenango Co, NY,[61] census 1850 in Pittsfield, Otsego Co, NY, census 1840 in Burlington, Otsego Co, NY, occupation carpenter & joiner.60

The birth of Ammi T. Brown is documented in "Connecticut Town Birth Records, pre-1870 (Barbour Collection)," Brooklyn Vital Records, Vol. 1, p. 232, in which he is identified as Amma Tufts Brown, b. Nov 22 1799 in Brooklyn, Connecticut, son of Rufus & Mary.  Although other variations of his name have been found in census records, he seems to have generally identified himself as Ammi T. Brown.  He was named for his uncle, Ammi Tufts, the husband of his mother's sister Lucy.

His marriage to Annis is documented only by their appearance together in the 1850 Census of Otsego County, New York.  Other than the births of his sons Ammi A. in Boston in 1829 and Andrew in New York in 1834, we have no record of Ammi T. Brown's whereabouts between his birth in Connecticut in 1799 and his appearance in the 1840 Census in Otsego County.

1840 Census, Burlington, Otsego Co, New York:

         Household of Ammi T. Brown

1 male age 40-50  (i.e., Ammi T. Brown, who we know from his birth record was born in 1799)

         1 male age 10-15  (i.e., son Ammi A. Brown, b. 1829)

1 male age 5-10 (i.e., son Andrew Brown, who we know from the 1900 Census was born Sep 1834)

1 female age 40-50 (i.e., wife Annis Brown, who we know from the 1850 Census was born about 1801)

1850 Census, Pittsfield, Otsego Co, New York, enumerated on Sep 6 1850:

Amina Brown, male, 50, b. Connecticut, occup house joiner; Annis Brown, female, 49, b. New York; Andrew Brown, male, 15, b. New York, farmer.

1870 Census, town of Guilford, Chenango Co, NY:

Ami Brown, 39, b. Massachusetts, occup house carpenter; Almira Brown, 28, b. New York; Edwin Brown, 11, b. Wisconsin; Ami Brown, female, 71, b. Connecticut, occup carpenter & joiner.

Ami is clearly a misspelling of Ammi, and labeling the elder Ami (Ammi) a female is considered to be a clerical error, especially in view of the listed occupation.

No record of this Ammi Brown was found in any 1860 or 1880 Census.

The 1830 Census of Adams, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, had the following entry:

         Household of Arnum Brown

         1 male age 30-40

         1 male under 5

         2 females age 20-30

         1 female under 5

Despite the name variance, the handwriting is not entirely clear, and the possibility cannot be discounted that this is the household of Ammi T. Brown.

"Gazetteer and Business Directory of Chenango County, N.Y. for 1869-70," compiled & published by Hamilton Child in 1869, p. 205, has the following consecutive entries for the town of New Berlin:

"BROWN, AMMI A., (South New Berlin), carpenter and joiner.

Brown, Ammi T., (South New Berlin), lot 41, T. 16, house joiner and farmer."

The preface to the publication states "Name set in CAPITALS indicates subscribers to this work."  It also states "Post Office Addresses in Parentheses" and explains that "T." stands for Township.

         http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nychenan/69nbrlin.htm

A similar publication five years later, "Boyd's Elmira and Corning Directory" for 1874-75, published by Andrew Boyd and W. Harry Boyd, contains the following entry on page 58:  "Brown Ammi A., carpenter, h 258 W Hudson ."  The key to abbreviations indicates that the "h" stands for house.

Since there was no entry for Ammi T. Brown, we can only speculate that he may have died in the intervening five years.  He also was not found in the 1880 Census.

The name Ammi is from the Hebrew, meaning "my people."

He married38,33 Annis ___, b. ca 1801 in New York,38 census 1850 in Pittsfield, Otsego Co, NY, census 1840 in Burlington, Otsego Co, NY.

Annis: Other than her birthplace and approximate birth date from the 1850 Census, we have found no information regarding Annis, wife of Ammi T. Brown.  The 1850 Census is the last record that we have of her.  Her death was presumably between 1850 and 1870, since husband Ammi was found without her in the 1870 Census.  No 1860 census record was found for either of them.

The name Annis is a medieval (both English and Scottish) form of Agnes much used by some colonial families.  It is often misread as ‘Annie,’ a diminutive not used as a formal name much before the nineteenth century.

(NOTE:  Although the enumeration was on Nov 9 1850, the census instructions call for a listing of all persons whose "usual place of abode" was in the enumerated household as of June 1, 1850.  Thus it is possible, if not likely, that Joseph Brown had already left Michigan for California, where his death occurred in Dec 1850.  Although the child listed as Ann is indicated as being a female, other records show that this was actually a son, Ammi.)

1860 Census, Kalamazoo Co, Michigan (Comstock Twp), enumerated on Jun 27 1860:

35.    Ammi Almanzia Brown (21.Ammi4, 7.Rufus3, 2.Benjamin2, 1.Benjamin1), b. Sep-13-1829 in Boston, MA,[70] d.          Very little has been found regarding Ammi Almanzia Brown and wife Almira Sanders.  It is not known for sure when or where they were married or when they moved to Minnesota.  Born in Massachusetts in 1829, Ammi was found in the 1840 Census with his parents and brother residing in Burlington, Otsego Co, NY.  He was next found in the 1860 Census residing in Crawford County, Wisconsin with his first wife, Deborah, and their two children.  (Further evidence of this first marriage is his 1898 application to the Washington Soldiers Home, on which he stated that he had two children, ages 44 and 16.)  He was a resident of Palmyra, Jefferson Co, Wisconsin in Aug 1862 when he entered military service for the Civil War.  Ammi's and Almira's marriage must have occurred upon Ammi's return from Civil War duties, as they are found together in the 1870 Census in Guilford, Chenango Co, New York.  They were next found in the 1885 Census of Wadena Co, Minnesota, with son Addison.

Circumstances taking Ammi from Minnesota to the state of Washington in 1893 are unknown.  An affidavit by son Addison Avery Brown, dated Aug 21 1935 at Clarksburg WV, regarding establishment of Addison's birthdate, stated that his family had moved from Minnesota to Montesano, Washington, when he was about nine years old, that the family Bible had been destroyed in a house fire about three years later, that his mother had died when he was about six years old, that his father had died when he was about 18 years old, and that he had no living siblings.

If Almira died in about 1888, as is likely based on son Addison's twice testifying as much, there is evidence that Ammi twice remarried.  The first re-marriage was confirmed by the discovery of an item in the Tacoma Daily News of Sep 10 1894, which reported that Ammi A. Brown had filed for divorce from Deborah S. Brown on the grounds of desertion after only three days of marriage.  A news item in the Nov 12 1894 issue of that newspaper stated in its entirety "Armi [sic] A. Brown has been divorced from Deborah S. Brown."  Just over three years later, Ammi's marital status was listed as married on his Feb 1898 application to the Washington Soldiers Home.  But on his March 1899 application to the Soldiers Home, his entry for marital status was "She has left me, I do not know where she is."  Correspondence from fourth wife Rachel A. Brown, and others, found in his Soldiers Home file shows that Ammi and Rachel were married on Jun 27 1895 in Tacoma, and that she left him in Spring 1898.  A letter from her dated Sep 29 1899 indicates that she had not been informed of Ammi's death three months before, supporting his contention that she had deserted him.

Addison Avery Brown always gave his parents' names as Ammi Almanzia Brown and Almira Saunders (or Sanders), and official records support that.  But Addison's obituary identified his parents as Adli Brown and Rachel Sanders.  The basis for that information is not known, other than an apparent confusion of his mother with his stepmother.  Ammi's middle name Almanzia has been found in only two documents, son Addison's delayed birth certificate, and Addison's application to the Modern Woodmen of America.

Addison's birth certificate, which was not registered until 1943 when he was a longtime resident of Doddridge County, WV, identified his father as Ammi Almanzia Brown, age 54 at the time of Addison's 1881 birth, born in Massachusetts, occupation carpenter; and his mother as Almira Saunders Brown, age 39 at time of Addison's birth, born in New York.  Information supporting the delayed filing was provided in affidavit by Edith Maria Weeden, 20 Brown Avenue, Norwich, Chenango County, NY, who was identified as Addison's cousin.  Addison always told his son Armand that Edith was Addison's only living relative outside the immediate family.

Civil War Service Records reflect that Ammi A. Brown, a resident of Palmyra, Wisconsin, served as a Private with Co A of the Wisconsin 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment from Aug 1862 to Jun 1865.  Applications to the Washington Soldiers Home in 1897, 1898 and 1899 show this to be the same Ammi A. Brown, born Sep 13 1829 in Boston MA, carpenter by trade, who was the husband of Almira and the father of Addison.  He applied for a Civil War pension on Sep 16 1890, classification "Invalid," which may correspond to what is now called "disabled."

1840 Census, Burlington, Otsego Co, New York:

         Household of Ammi T. Brown

1 male age 40-50  (this would be Ammi T. Brown, who we know from the 1870 Census was born about 1799)

         1 male age 10-15  (i.e., Ammi A. Brown, b. 1829)

         1 male age 5-10

         1 female age 40-50

No record of Ammi Brown was found in any 1850 Census.

         1860 Census, Crawford Co, Wisconsin:

Ami Brown, 30, b. New York, occupation (blank); Deborah, 28, b. New York; Ida, 6, b. New York; Edwin, 2, b. Wisconsin.

Although our Ammi Brown was not born in New York, he did live there before coming to Wisconsin.   Despite the discrepancy, this appears to be our Ammi with his first wife and their children (Edwin later appears with him in the 1870 Census).  Ammi was a resident of Wisconsin when he entered the military in 1862.

1870 Census, town of Guilford, Chenango Co, NY:

Ami Brown, 39, b. Massachusetts, occup house carpenter; Almira Brown, 28, b. New York; Edwin Brown, 11, b. Wisconsin; Ami Brown, 71, b. Connecticut, occup carpenter & joiner.

Although relationships are not stated, it would appear that the elder Ammi is the father of the younger, who in turn is the father of Edwin.  Based on the earlier census, Edwin's mother was Deborah, not Almira.  No entry for this Edwin Brown was found in any subsequent census.

No entry for Ammi Brown was found in the 1880 Census, although we know that he was in Minnesota for the birth of son Addison in 1881.

The 1880 Census of Minnesota lists in Aldrich Twp, Wadena Co, Albert A. Brown, age 40, carpenter, born in New York; and Almira Brown, age 35, his wife, born in New York, her father born in Connecticut, and her mother born in New York.  Despite the discrepancies, the possibility cannot be discounted that this is the couple in question.  The same Census shows Charles W. Brown, age 35, born in New York, father born in Connecticut, mother born in New York.  Given ages and locations, these two Browns could be brothers or other close relatives.

The 1885 Census of Minnesota lists in Aldrich Twp, Wadena County, A. A. Brown, age 53, born in Massachusetts; Almira Brown, age 41, born in New York; and Addison (misspelled Adison), age 3, born in Minnesota.

Minnesota Land Records, Document 16156, St. Cloud Land Office, on file at U.S. Bureau of Land Management, show that Ammi A. Brown purchased 80 acres of land on Dec 16 1890, with the following legal description:  Aliquot Parts S1/2SE, Base Line 5TH PM, Fractional Section No, Township 134 N, Range 34 W, Section # 4.

In "The Famous & Not So Famous," published by the Verndale Historical Society in 1987, it is noted that the relationship between the many Brown families who settled there has not been entirely determined.  Of the many pages devoted to settlers of the Brown surname, only the following three entries appear regarding this one:  (1) "Architect and Builder.  I am prepared to take contracts for erecting buildings of all kinds.  Plans and specifications furnished on short notice.  Stair building a specialty."  [Wadena County Tribune, Dec 5 1878, attributed to A. A. Brown]  (2) "A. A. Brown has erected a barn near Verndale."  [Verndale Journal, Dec 26 1879]  (3) "The A. A. Brown Furniture, 1882, is mentioned in 'Bartlett Township History,' Volume I."  It is noted that there were apparently two A. A. Browns, Ammi Almanzia and Albert A., who were carpenters and residing in Verndale at that time.

Based strictly on the two Censuses and on son Addison's birth certificate, Ammi would have been born either ca 1840, ca 1832 (most likely), or ca 1827; but entries on his applications to the Washington Soldiers' Home consistently and specifically state his birth date as Sep 13 1829.  Ammi Almanzia Brown was thought by family lore to have died at age 74 of apoplexy, although son Addison, born in 1881, recalled that he was about 18 at the time of his father's death, which would have been shortly after Ammi's last admission to the Washington Soldiers' Home in Orting, Pierce Co, WA in 1899.  Discovery of his grave at the Washington Soldiers Home Cemetery in Orting shows that Ammi Brown's death occurred on Jun 20 1899, also reflected in Pierce County death records.

         He married39 (1) Deborah ___, b. ca 1832 in New York,39 census 1860 in Crawford Co, WI.

He married73,[78] (2) btwn 1860-1870 [The 1860 Census shows Ammi with his first wife, Deborah, but he was with Almira in the 1870 Census.], Almira Sanders, b. ca 1843 in New York,[79] (daughter of Henry J. Sanders and Olive L. Mowry), d. ca 1888 in Minnesota,[80] resided 1885 in Aldrich Twp, Wadena Co, MN,[81] census 1870 in Guilford, Chenango Co, NY, census 1850, 1860 in Norwich, Chenango Co, NY.

Almira: Addison Avery Brown always gave his mother's name as Almira Saunders and stated that she was one-half American Indian.  Almira's birth was in New York sometime between 1840 and 1844, based on the following:   Age 9 at 1850 Census would put it in about 1841, age 20 at 1860 Census would put it in about 1840, age 41 at 1885 Census would put it in about 1844, and Addison's birth certificate gives her age at his birth as 39, putting her birth in about 1842.  But with her sister Mary's birth date confirmed in both the 1900 Census and her death record as Feb 1842, and with Almira appearing in the 1850 Census one year younger than Mary, Almira's birth date is more likely to be about 1843.

Almira was with her parents and siblings in the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Norwich, Chenango Co, NY, and she was with husband Ammi (and his father and son from a previous marriage) in the 1870 Census of Guilford, Chenango Co, NY.

Almira was not found in the Census of 1880.  That year's census of  Wadena County, Minnesota, lists an Almira as the wife of Albert A. Brown, giving her age as 35 (b. ca 1845) and reports her father's birthplace as Connecticut, and her mother's as New York.  Despite the similarities in names and locations, this does not appear to be the same couple.

The 1885 Minnesota Census places her in the household of A. A. Brown with son Addison, identifies her as Almira and gives her age as 41 (b. ca 1844), birthplace New York.

No entry for her was found in the 1900 or subsequent censuses.

In an affidavit filed by son Addison in 1935 to establish his date of birth, he stated that his mother had died when he was about age six.  This would put her death in about 1887 or 1888.  In 1915, in an application for membership in the Modern Woodmen of America, a fraternal beneficiary society, Addison stated that his mother died at age 44 of "inflammation of bowels."  This would also put her death in about 1888.  One question on that application was "Which do you resemble in general characteristics, father or mother?," to which Addison stated that it was his mother.  This is noteworthy because Addison did have certain facial characteristics associated with American Indians.

Information provided at Addison's funeral identified his mother as Rachel Sanders.  This reference is believed to be the result of confusing Addison's mother Almira with his stepmother Rachel.  A funeral card found in family papers identified the deceased as Rachel A. Brown, died Feb 1 1904, age 53y 10m 25d, location not given.  Based on age at death, the birth date would be Mar 7 1850.  Through Veterans records, we have determined that Rachel was Ammi's fourth wife.

Thus, there is still some uncertainty as to the exact identity and birth/death dates of the wife of Ammi Brown and the mother of Addison.  It does appear fairly certain, however, that her parents were Henry J. Sanders and Olive Mowry.  If Almira died in 1887 or 1888 as stated by Addison, the location would likely have been in Minnesota, since she was there in 1885, husband Ammi is known from a land purchase to have been there in 1890, and his move to Washington State occurred in 1893.

He married (3) 1894, Deborah S. ___.  They were divorced on Nov-  -1894 in Washington State.[82]

He married (4) Jun-27-1895 in Tacoma, Pierce Co, WA,[83] Rachel A. ___, b. Mar- 7-1850 in New York,[84],50 d. Feb- 1-1904 in Tacoma, Pierce Co, WA,[85],[86] buried in Tacoma, Pierce Co, WA,[87] census 1900 in Tacoma, Pierce Co, WA.50  They were separated in Spring 1898.

Rachel: 1900 Census, Pierce County, Washington (City of Tacoma), enumerated on Jun 9 1900 at 405 1/2 25th Street East:

(First name illegible) Brown, female, 50, b. Mar 1850 in New York, both parents b. in NY, occupation housewife, widowed, mother of three children (two still living); dau Cara V. Brown, 17, b. Jul 1882 in NY, both parents b. in NY, single, occupation student.  (Note:  Cara's last name actually was probably something other than Brown, since Rachel and Ammi Brown were married just five years before.)

The remainder of the household consisted of seven boarders:  David Mannanson, 30, b. 1870 in Minnesota, occupation carpenter, married 10 yrs; Steven Mannanson, 8, b. 1892 in Michigan; Pearl Mannanson, 1, b. Dec 1898 in Minnesota; George C. Reed, 27, b. Sep 1872 in Iowa, single, occupation professional athlete; Fred H. Wilson, 27, b. Feb 1873 in Wisconsin, married one year, occupation gambler; Clara A. NY, mother of 2 children (one still living); servant Gaby Beckwith, white male, 44, b. NY, both parents b. in U.S., single, occupation laborer on dairy farm.

It is noted that the birthplace of Andrew's father is given as New York, rather than Connecticut, and that there is an inconsistency with the birthplace of Malvina's father.  We consider these to be errors, probably due to the fact that Andrew's father Ammi lived nearly his entire life in New York.

55.    Addison Avery Brown (35.Ammi5, 21.Ammi4, 7.Rufus3, 2.Benjamin2, 1.Benjamin1), b. Aug- 1-1881 in Verndale, Wadena Co, MN,[95],[96] d. Jan-13-1954 in Youngstown, Mahoning Co, OH, buried in Lake Park Cemetery, Youngstown, OH,[97] resided in Youngstown, Mahoning Co, OH,78 resided 1910 - 1943 in West Union, Doddridge Co, WV,78,[98],[99] resided 1893 - 1910 in Chehalis County (now Grays Harbor Co), WA,50,96 resided originally in Verndale, Wadena Co, MN, census 1910 in Montesano, Chehalis (now Grays Harbor) Co, WA, census 1900 in Satsop, Chehalis (now Grays Harbor) Co, WA, census 1885 in Aldrich Twp, Wadena Co, MN, occupation glass-blower (in WV) and steel mill worker (in OH).78

Born in Minnesota in 1881, Addison Brown moved from there to the state of  Washington with his father in June 1893.  Federal Census data of Jun 5 1900 identifies Addison Y. [sic] Brown, age 19, residing in Satsop, Chehalis County (now known as Grays Harbor County), Washington as a servant and farm laborer in the household of Edward F. Foster, b. Aug 1862 in Idaho.  Addison's birthdate was given as Aug 1880 [sic], birthplace Minnesota, father's birthplace Massachusetts, mother's birthplace New York.  Edward Foster's wife Mary was shown as born in Apr 1864 in West Virginia.  The Fosters' neighbors were the family of Jasper and Virginia Mowry; they and the oldest five of their seven children were born in West Virginia, the younger two born in Washington.  We can only speculate that it was through the Fosters and/or the Mowrys that Addison was somehow introduced to Nancy "Babe" Haught and eventually came to West Virginia.  This is supported by the fact that Jasper Mowry appeared in the 1870 Census of Doddridge County (New Milton Twp) as the 9-year-old son of George & Mary Mowry, and that Jasper N. Mowry & Jennie (nickname for Virginia) Knight were married in Doddridge County on Mar 10 1856.

Census data of April 19 1910 states that Addison Brown was a 28-year-old laborer living in Montesano Precinct, County of Chehalis (now Grays Harbor County), Washington, with place of birth as Minnesota in 1881, residing as a "hired man" in the household of John C. Smith (age 52, born in Wisconsin) and his wife of 27 years, Jennie C. (age 47, born in West Virginia), and their children.  Addison must have come to West Virginia soon thereafter, as he and Nancy "Babe" Haught were married Dec 20 1910 in West Union, and daughter Waneta was born Oct 23, 1911.

1920 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (West Union District), enumerated on Jan 3 1920 at 111 Wabash Avenue:

         A. A. Brown, 38, b. Minnesota, both parents b. Minnesota, occupation truck-dray driver; wife Babe Brown, 33; step-dau Clella Haught, 15; dau Jaunita Brown, 8; son Vernon A. Brown, 2 months.

Stated birthplace of Addison's parents is clearly in error.

1930 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (West Union District), enumerated on Apr 14 1930 (location appears to be one of several households at 317 E. Main St.):

Addison A. Brown, 47, b. Minnesota, both parents b. Minnesota, occupation salesman at feed store, age 26 at first marriage; wife Babe, 43, age 22 at first marriage, b. WV, father b. Pa., mother b. WV; dau Mabel W, 18; son Vernon A, 10; son Armond L, 7.

Again, the stated birthplace of Addison's parents is in error.  Daughter Mabel W. Brown was better known as Waneta Brown; with her name appearing as Juanita Brown, she had been enumerated a week earlier in Harrison County in the household of half-sister Clella and her husband Lawrence Ingram.

1940 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (Town of West Union), enumerated on Apr 29 1940 at 304 Cottage Ave:

         A. A. Brown, 59, b. Minnesota, laborer; wife Babe, 52, b. WVa; son Vernon, 20, single, laborer at cleaning & pressing shop; son Armand, 17.  (Note:  It is known from immediate family that in 1940 Addison Brown was employed as a delivery truck driver for the L. A. Hess Transfer Company of Fairmont, WV.)

In an affidavit dated Aug 21 1935 at Clarksburg WV, regarding establishment of Addison's birthdate, Addison stated that his family had moved to Montesano, Washington when he was about nine years old, that the family Bible had been destroyed in a house fire about three years later, that his mother had died when he was about six years old, that his father had died when he was about 18 years old, and that he had no living siblings.

Addison always told his son Armand that his only living relative not descended from him was a cousin, Edith Maria Weeden, whose address was 10 Guernsey Street, Norwich (Chenango County), NY.  We have since determined that Edith Weeden was the wife of Archer Lewis Weeden (b. Mar 18 1870) (married May 20 1891) and was born Edith Maria Terwilliger in New York on Feb 13 1873, daughter of Andrew Jackson Terwilliger (1829-1904) and Mary Esther Sanders (1842-1919) (married Dec 12 1871).  Census data shows that Mary Esther Sanders was a sister of Almira Sanders, Addison's mother.  It was Edith Maria Weeden who in January 1943 provided an affidavit supporting the filing of Addison's delayed birth certificate in Verndale, Wadena County, Minnesota.

He married Dec-20-1910 in West Union, Doddridge Co, WV,[100],[101] Nancy Lou "Babe" Haught, b. Jan-19-1884 in West Union, Doddridge Co, WV,[102] (daughter of David Marion Haught and Mary Watson), d. Sep-23-1977 in Coshocton, Coshocton Co, OH,78,[103] buried in Lake Park Cemetery, Youngstown, OH,[104] resided (nursing home) in Coshocton, Coshocton Co, OH,78,[105] resided formerly in Youngstown, Mahoning Co, OH,78,103 resided originally in West Union, Doddridge Co, WV.78

Nancy: Nancy was always sensitive about her age, and no one in the family was ever sure exactly when she was born.  The official Jan 19 1884 birth date was provided at the time of the delayed recording of her birth record in 1944 and was based principally on the testimony of her sister Rosa.  Age 23 given at time of Dec 1910 marriage would put birth date in 1887, as would age 43 in the 1930 Census.  The SSDI reports her birth date as Jan 19 1885, while her headstone shows her birth date as Jan 19 1889, also incorrect.  A birth date of Jan 1882 was given in the 1900 Census, correctly placing her between older sister Icy Dell (listed as b. Jul 1880) and younger brother John Homer (b. Nov 1883).  An analysis of the 1900 Census data for that household leads to the conclusion that Nancy and siblings Elizabeth, Icy & Homer seem to have shifted their birthdates in later years to make themselves appear a few years younger than they were.  In Nancy's case, the shift seems to have occurred at about the time of the 1910 Census (when she was listed as being only 4 years older than in the 1900 Census), as her given age stayed fairly consistent after that.  In the end, although we list her birth date as January 1884 to conform with her official birth record,  the likelihood is that she was actually born in January 1882 as indicated in the 1900 Census.

Armand held several jobs as a youth, including doing custodial work at the West Union Post Office and pumping gas at the local filling station.  After his 1941 graduation from Doddridge County High School, he worked at the A&P grocery store at the end of Main Street near the court house.  He had a knack for working with fresh produce, much of which was displayed outside the store to attract customers.  One person it attracted was a pretty teenager who walked by every morning on her way to school.  Armand happened to be watching one day and saw her grab an apple and continue on her way.  He rushed out of the store and demanded that she either return the apple or pay for it.  We don't know what she ended up doing, because at this point in telling the story, Armand would always say "And that's how I met my wife.  I caught her stealing apples."  That teenage girl was Geneva Gaston, and they married a few years later.  Although it was never made clear in the telling of the story, there's little doubt that far from being an apple thief, Geneva was simply trying to get the attention of someone special.

(1945), Salem College.

Geneva: Graduate of Doddridge County High School (1945) and attended Salem College, Salem, WV, 1945-46.  Worked for two years in the office of the Ford garage in West Union.  Upon her marriage to Armand Brown in 1946, she moved to Youngstown, Ohio, where Armand's family had moved from West Union while he was overseas during World War II.  From 1962 to 1974, she worked as cashier and office worker for A&P food stores in Youngstown and vicinity.  In June 1974, with Armand's heart problems preventing him from continuing his job with A&P in Youngstown, they returned to Doddridge County, moving into the house on Oxford Road, at Cabin Run, where Geneva had lived with her family for about five years prior to her marriage.  From then until his death in 1985, Armand and Geneva operated what had been her parents' small grocery store adjacent to the family home, changing the name from Gaston's Grocery to Brown's Grocery.  With her brother Sam, Geneva was a driving force and principal compiler of this genealogy.

Officers of the Wisconsin 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment were Colonel Charles C. Meservey; Lieutenant Colonel Jacob T. Foster; and Majors Charles C. Meservey, L. H. Drury, Richard W. Hubbell and David C. Fulton.  The regiment originated in Dec 1861 as a detached company of 2nd Wisconsin Infantry and was stationed at Fort Cass.  On Aug 28 1862, a detachment of 40 men, with three pieces of artillery, was sent to garrison Fort Buffalo, an exposed post, where it repulsed an enemy attack.  It returned to Fort Cass in Sep 1862, moved to Fort Ellsworth in November, and was transferred to Fort Worth in May 1863.  In Jun 1863, Capt. Meservey was authorized to recruit a battalion of four batteries of heavy artillery, using the original battery as a basis.  Battery A moved in October from Fort Worth to Battery Rodgers, where it remained until May 1864, and was then transferred to Fort Willard (Fort Willard Circle and Glen Drive, off Fort Hunt Road, Alexandria, VA).  It returned to Battery Rodgers in August and was mustered out at Washington on Aug 18 1865.  The entire regiment's original strength was 1,777, with gains by recruits (407), draft (4) and reentlistments (29) bringting to total to 2,217.  Losses were by death (73), desertion (70), transfer (28), discharge (223), unaccounted for (3), and mustered out (1,820).  (Sources:  "Civil War Regiments from Wisconsin," by Lt. [79]  1850 Census, Note:  Earl Perry Crandall, citing NBV : VARS' Records; Vol II, p. 171, reports Almira's birth as Mar 18 1845 in Plainfield, Otsego Co, NY.  But this was actually for a different person, Almira Saunders, daughter of William M. Saunders & Catherine Beedle.

[80]  Presumed, In an affidavit filed by son Addison in 1935 to establish his date of birth, he stated that his mother had died when he was about age six.  This would put her death in about 1887 or 1888.  In 1915, in an application for membership in the Modern Woodmen of America, a fraternal benificiary society, Addison stated that his mother died at age 44 of "inflammation of bowels."  The location was probably in Minnesota, since Almira was there for the 1885 Census, husband Ammi is known from a land purchase to have been there in 1890, and his move to Washington State occurred in 1893.

[81]  1885 Minnesota Census , Her age listed as 35, her birthplace as New York, her father's birthplace as Connecticut, her mother's birthplace as New York, and her residence as Aldrich Township, Wadena County.

Brown has filed a suit for divorce from Deborah S. Brown, on the grounds of desertion.  They lived together but for three days, and during those three days she refused to be a wife to him in fact as well as name and then returned to her former home and refused to live with him."  An article in the Nov 12 1894 issue of that newspaper, p. 3, one of several items under the title "City News," stated in its entirety "Armi [sic] A. Brown has been divorced from Deborah S. Brown.".

[83]  Marriage record, A letter from S. A. Crandall, attorney for Rachel A. Brown, written to S. M. Allen at the Orting Soldiers Home, is quoted here in its entirety:  "Tacoma, Wn, April 27 1900.  S.
