Note (2) Military records show that Charles Smallwood enlisted as a Private in Co H, 12th W.Va. Infantry in Grafton on Aug 16 1862. In January 1863, he was present for duty "at work on fortification." He was a patient at the U.S. Army General Hospital in Grafton from Apr 5 1864 until his discharge from service on Jun 3 1865. The reason for his hospitalization is not indicated. Note (3) Death record states birthplace a Boothsville, which is in Marion County. Booths Creek was probably intended. Her birth record shows location only as Taylor County. Note (4) Age 40 in her May 1915 death record puts her birth date in about 1875. But her birth record shows it as May 14 1879, corresponding to her age 21 in her Nov 1900 marriage record.
