Event Notes Note (1) Newspaper article, "Albuquerque Journal," Tuesday, November 2, 1920, in its entirety: HENRY RUHL SUCCUMBS IN A LONELY CANYON IN JEMEZ MOUNTAINS (by The Associated Press) Sante Fe, N.M., Nov. 1. -- Below par physically as a result of being wounded in the war while with the Twenty-seventh division, Henry Ruhl, aged 27, a recent Yale graduate and instructor at the Los Alamos ranch school west of here, died of exhaustion in a lonely canyon in the Jemez mountains Saturday night while on a hunting trip with a student, Donald Thompson, aged 14, Washington, D.C. The two were on foot and camped in the snow. When Thompson awoke Sunday morning, Ruhl was dead. The boy walked twelve miles through a blizzard to Buckman, and truck was sent out for the body, which had to be carried two miles to the road. The remains arrived here today for shipment east, accompanied by the broken-hearted wife. Ruhl came to the Los Animas school only last year. Note (2) Inscription on vault plaque: HENRY WALKER RUHL 1st Lieutenant, 118th Infantry Born June 26th, 1895 Mortally wounded, October 5, 1918 Bellicourt, France Died October 31, 1920 Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori NOTE: "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori" is a line from the Roman lyrical poet Horace's Odes (III.2.13). The line can be translated as: "It is sweet and proper to die for the fatherland." [Wikipedia] Although the inscription implies that his death was the direct result of combat wounds in World War I, his Harrison County death record states that he died on October 30 [sic], 1920, in New Mexico from "exposure to cold while on hunting trip."
