(6) 1910 Census, Doddridge County, WV (Cove District) Event Notes Note (1) News item, West Union Herald, Thursday, January 17, 1907, in its entirety: MAN DROWNED AT MARKET Elijah Lipscomb was drowned at Market Saturday morning. He lives on the Marshall Maxwell place, and was employed by Mr. Maxwell about the store on that day, on account of the high water. The store building is located very near the stream, which was very high and they were moving things out of its way. While thus engaged, a chicken got in the stream and started to float off. Mr. Lipscomb started after the fowl, but his friends advised him to let it go. The chicken floated down the stream a short distance and lodged agains a tree. Mr. Lipscomb waded out to it; as he reached for it, he slipped off the bank into the stream. He came to the surface twice, but floated rapidly away. An effort was made to catch him, but with no avail. His body was found Sunday morning by Johnson Lowther, where it had lodged against some bushes. The funeral took place Sunday. Lipscomb was a poor man and a hard worker. He leaves a wife and two small children. Note (2) Birthplace given as Ritchie County in 1905 marriage record, but as Doddridge County in 1911 marriage record. The 1900 Census shows her birth date as Nov 1880. Note (3) Informant for her death record was Clarence E. Husk, Osage, WV, relationship not stated.
