Overfield joined for duty Sep 2 1861 in Pennsboro, Ritchie County, and mustered in as a Private on Sep 4 1861 at Webbs Mills, Ritchie County, in Co E, 6th W.Va. Infantry. His age at enlistment was given as 18. Company muster roll for Mar/Apr 1862 show that he was near Burnt Bridge near Toll Gate on detached guard duty. The muster roll for May/Jun 1863 states that he was at Brandy Gap Tunnel building a blockhouse. He was discharged in Wheeling on Sep 10 1864 by expiration of service.
