Event Notes Note (1) John Woofter was not a member of any military unit during the Civil War. However, military records show that in October 1862, John Wofter (sic), Citizen, was captured in Gilmer County and accused of "aiding Rebles" and was sent to Camp Chase in Ohio for confinement. On Dec 18 1862, John Woofter, resident of Gilmer County, was one of many civilians released from Camp Chase by order of the Secretary of War. Condition of his release was to report to Major Joseph Darr, the Provost Marshall at Wheeling, W.Va., for further orders. He was also required to take an oath of allegiance. Among the other civilian prisoners also released in mid-December were: Richard Garrett of Harrison Co (required to take oath of allegiance and post $1,000 bond) John T. Darr) It is likely that the foregoing civilians were imprisoned for the same reason as John Woofter, suspicion of giving aid to the enemy or of being a Southern sympathizer. The text of John Woofter's release document was as follows: "Headquarters, Camp Chase, Ohio. Dec 18 1862. By virture of an order received from Secy of War, dated at Washington, Dec 16 1862, John Woofter, resident of Gilmer County, and State of Va., Prisoner at this Post; after having complied with the requirements of, and subscribed the following Oath and Declaration, is hereby released from confinement." The document contained the following physical description: Height 5'11", complexion dark, hair black, eyes black, whiskers greyish. His age was incorrectly given as 57, overstated by eleven years. Note (2) Local news item, "Doddridge County Republican," Thursday, Sep 28 1916, in its entirety: "Dr. A. J. Woofter, a prominent Weston physician, and vice president of the First National Bank of Weston, was killed by the local B. & O. train operated between Weston and the Fair Grounds at Bendale last Thursday. The aged physician was mingling with the crowd near the grounds and talking to friends, and failed to notice the train as it backed towards him."Name Index
