Event Notes Note (1) During World War II, he enlisted with the U.S. Naval Reserve as an Apprentice Seaman. His rating was later changed to Seaman First Class and then to Coxswain. He completed Naval Armed Guard School in Shelton, Va. His service included the following vessels/stations: Naval Armed Guard Center (Gulf); SS Gabriel Duvall; Armed Guard Center in Brooklyn, NY; SS Esso Baltimore; SS Arthur St. Clair. He served from 1943 until 1946 and received an Honorable Discharge. He also enlisted and served in the U.S. Army in 1949 attaining the rank of Corporal while a member of Battery "D", 48th Antiaircraft Artillary Automatic Weapons Battalion, and was stationed at the U.S. Army Base at Karlsruhe, Germany. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1952.
