He mustered in as a Private in Co M, 6th W.Va. Inf, on 16 Nov 1861 at West Union. Company Muster Rolls show that he served the following military assignments: Jan/Feb 1862 and 30 Apr 1862 to 31 Aug 1862 - Guard at No. 4 Tunnel and at bridges of the North Western Virginia Railroad Jan/Feb 1863 - Guard at No. 5 Tunnel at N.W.Va.R.R. bridges. May/Jun 1863 - Guard at No. 18 Tunnel and N.W.Va.R.R. bridges Jul/Aug 1863, Sep/Oct 1863 and Nov/Dec 1863 - Guard at Blockhouse No. 8 (N.W.Va.R.R.) 28 Dec 1863 - Reenlisted at Cumberland, Maryland, according to Co M & D Roll of Veteran Volunteers Jan/Feb 1864 - Guard at Blockhouse No. 8 (N.W.Va.R.R.) In May/Jun 1864, he was on furlough, rejoining his unit on 23 Jul 1864. On 26 Dec 1864, he was transferred to Co L, 6th W.Va. Infantry. He mustered out on 10 Jun 1865 at Wheeling.
