He later received a commission as a Lieutenant in the newly-designated Army Air Force, with duty as a co-pilot on a Flying Fortress with the 8th Air Force in England. On Oct 4 1943, he was captured by Nazi forces and held prisoner until Apr 28/29 1945, when he was liberated from the German prison camp at Moosburg (Stalag VII-A) by the US 7th Army.
