"He signed on the S.S. David McKelvy, operated by Tidewater Associated Oil Company, as able seaman on April 20th, 1942, at Baltimore, Md. This vessel was lost through enemy action on May 14th, 1942, and as a result of the casualty Mr. Reed was presumed lost and reported missing by the Commandant, R. H. Farinholt, Lt.U.S.C.G.R.(T). "Sterling Reed was the son of Clarence E. and Anna Garrison Reed, who operated a hotel in West Union for several years; his wife was Ethel Lenore Cumberledge Reed and resides in Clarksburg at this time.
