Although everyone's birthplace was given as Virginia, Benton Myers was in Maryland for the 1850 Census, and it is believed that he was born in that state. Note (2) Due to company reconstruction, duplicate records for Benton Myers are filed under Co G, 5th W.Va. Cavalry and New Co G, 6th W.Va. Cavalry. On Mar 11 1864, he joined for duty and enrolled at Wheeling in the new Co G, 6th W.Va. Cavalry. The next day at Wheeling, he mustered in as a Private in the same unit. Company muster rolls show that in September 1864, he was sick at home in Doddridge County. On Nov 28 1864, at the Battle of New Creek WV, he was taken captive by Confederate forces. He was held as a prisoner of war at Libby Prison in Richmond until Feb 14 1865, when he was paroled at Annapolis, Maryland. He returned to duty in April 1865 and was mustered out on Jun 19 1865 at Camp Chase, near Columbus, Ohio. A compilation of newspaper articles of the day regarding the Battle of New Creek can be found at http://www.wvculture.org/history/sesquicentennial/18641128.html NOTE: The state-issued Civil War medal intended for him was never claimed and remains in storage at the West Virginia State Archives in Charleston.
