Event Notes Note (1) Age 73 in obituary would put birth in about 1842, and his death record states Jun 20 1844, but age 4 in 1850 Census puts it in about 1846. Birthplace given as Marion Co in marriage record, but his death record and obituary state West Union, with the obituary specifying that he "was born in the old Maulsby homestead, corner of Court and Church streets." Note (2) Listed as Francis M. Lewis, 23, common laborer, in household (boarding house) of Mahala Ingle, 50, and her three children. His wife was not present. Note (3) Military records show that Francis Marion Lewin served first in Co. H, 4th W.Va. Cavalry. He joined for duty on 28 July 1863 in West Union, mustered-in as a Private on29 Aug 1863 in Parkersburg, and mustered-out a Private on 8 Mar 1864 in Wheeling. On 22 May 1864, he was admitted to the hospital in Grafton for treatment of syphilis. He then reenlisted as a Private in Co C, 6th W.Va. Infantry, joining for duty on 29 Aug 1864 in Wheeling and mustering in on 30 Aug 1864 in Wheeling. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 Oct 1864 and reduced to Private on 12 Dec 1864. He mustered-out with the Company as a Private on 10 Jun 1865 in Wheeling. Note (4) Birth date given in 1900 Census as Oct 1850, but death record state Oct 23 1849. Note (5) Birth date given in 1900 Census as Apr 1892, but headstone shows it as Apr 29 1893.
