Note (1) Served aboard the T2 tanker (fleet oiler) USS Kennebec (AO-36) and the attack
cargo ship USS Shoshone (AKA-65).  On the Shoshone, he took part in the Battles
of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.  He was witness to the raising of the American flag at
Iwo Jima.
