(18) Headstone, AT REST Mrs. Emily Jennings Passes Away Mrs. Emily Jennings, wife of our townsman, Mr. Hiram Jennings died at her home in this city late yesterday afternoon, after a short illness. She was taken sick Monday evening. Mrs. Jennings was about 55 years of age. She was born in West Union, West Virginia, and came to Missouri in 1873. She leaves a husband, Mr. Hiram Jennings, and two children, Mrs. Clara L. Irwin of Kansas City, and Mr. John B. Jennings of the Mechanics Bank and also city treasurer of the city of Moberly. Deceased was a member of the Davis and Randolph families of Virginia. The funeral sermon will be preached at the Methodist Episcopal Church tonight by Rev. Robert White, and Mrs. Jennings’ remains will at once be taken to the place of her birth, West Union, West Va., for interment, and will be accompanied by her husband and son, Messrs. Hiram and John B. Jennings. In the death of this most estimable lady the husband loses a loving and true wife, the children an affectionate mother and the best friend they ever can have, the community a most estimable and exemplary member, and Christianity a bright, consistent worker, one whose example may well be taken as a pattern. Mrs. Jennings was a good woman, one, who was ever ready to do her part and lend a helping hand to all good deeds, with the additional virtue that she made no parade of her good works, but did it in a quiet, unostentatious, ladylike way. (22) Susie Davis Nicholson, Davis - The Settlers of Salem, West Virginia, Gordon Printing Co, Strasburg OH, 1979 (Revised & Enlarged) < www.wvgenweb.org/harrison/books.htm >. Event Notes Note (1) In household of daughter and son-in-law, Emily & Hiram Jennings. Note (2) "Davis - The Settlers of Salem WV," p. 107, states birth date as Jan 20 1829. But date on headstone is Nov 20 1829. Note (3) A handwritten list of the Lewis T. Davis' students in the year 1852 was signed by him in 1914 and placed in a frame. Many years later, it was donated to the Doddridge County Historical Society by Marsha Leggett, a distant cousin. Note (4) Birthplace given in obituary as West Union, but marriage record shows it as Harrison County. Both locations could be correct, since Doddridge County was formed in 1845 from parts of Harrison, Tyler, Ritchie and Lewis counties. In 1841, the town of West Union was in Harrison County. Note (5) "Davis - The Settlers of Salem, West Virginia," p. 108, incorrectly reports death place as West Union. But her obituary clearly states that she died at her home in Moberly, Missouri, and that "Mrs. Jennings’ remains will at once be taken to the place of her birth, West Union, West Va., for interment, and will be accompanied by her husband and son, Messrs. Hiram and John B. Jennings." Note (6) "Davis - The Settlers of Salem WV," p. 56, reports birth-death dates as Jul 19 1851 - Dec 2 1852. But "West Union Cemeteries," p. 41, reports death date on headstone as Dec 23 1852, age 1y 4m 13d, which calculates to a birth date of Aug 10 1851.
