(8) Emily Pritchard Cary, Scottsdale AZ , The Pritchard Family History (Heritage Books, Bowie MD, 1999, rev 2001). "There are several explanations why John Prichard dropped the 't' from his surname. Because clerks filling out many of his Revolutionary War documents used this spelling, he may have decided to adopt it for legal purposes. His younger brother, William, also eventually dropped the 't', although it was retained in some of his earlier legal papers. "One intriguing factor which may have considerable bearing upon their decision is the influx into western Virginia - notably Monongalia County - of Melungeons (or Guineas) with the surname Pritchard. These people were regarded by their neighbors as 'half-breeds,' as they often were a mixture of Portugese, Spanish, Turkish, Muslim, American Indian, and - more infrequently - blacks. Since the Pritchards and other settlers in the area were proud of their English and Welsh heritage, they did not wish to be mistaken for 'mixed breeds.' Both John and William may have chosen this means of distancing themselves from people they considered to be undesirable, because once the connection was made, it was almost impossible to undo. ... Besides Pritchard (with a 't'), other common Melungeon surnames in western Virginia were Dalton, Goens, Kennedy, Mayle, Minard, Minor, and Norris. ... A detailed account of them is found in 'The Melungeons: The Resurrection of a Proud People - An Untold Story of Ethnic Cleansing in America' by N. Brent Kennedy (Mercer University Press, Macon, Georgia, September 1996.)", p. 56, 58. Event Notes Note (1) There are several discrepancies about the date of John Pri(t)chard's death. On DAR records, it ranges from Jun 21 1842 to Mar 24 1847, the date carved on his tombstone at Sandcreek Cemetery. (Emily Pritchard Cary, p. 61) Note (2) Emily Pritchard Cary (p. 82) reports his burial in "White Oak Cemetery, Oxford," while "Ritchie County WV Cemeteries," p. 631, reports his as the only burial at Pritchard Cemetery, described as "Incomplete. Near Oxford; Exact Location Unknown. See MKL - p. 40." Name Index
