      There are three conflicting records of the death of this child:
      (1) Identified as Ella G. Cottrill, white female, age 4, dau of W. F. & Ida, died Dec 28 1891 in Doddridge County, cause of death whooping cough. Informant: Mother.

      (2) Identified as Ella Cottrill, white female, age 3y 10m, died Feb 1 1891 in West Union, cause of death pneumonia & whooping cough, buried at Arnolds Creek on Feb 2 1891. Undertaker: R. Harshbarger, West Union. Report filed on Mar 2 1891 by physician McLane & Griffin M.D., West Union.

      NOTE: Of the three entries, the one filed by the mother appears to have the least credence, as it is simply an entry in an alphabetized ledger-style listing that has been transcribed from original records, and is thus more subject to error. Perhaps Dec 1891 was when the mother filed the report, or it could have been simply a mistranscription. As for the other two, it was not unusual in that era for both the undertaker and physician to submit reports of the same death, often with slightly different details. In this case, entering the child's age as 3y 10m puts her birth within a few weeks of her documented May 12 1887 birth date. In any event, it does appear that all three entries pertain to the death of the same child. It is not clear, however, where she was buried, as Arnolds Creek could refer to the Arnolds Creek Christian Cemetery, or to the Ruley Cemetery on Arnolds Creek, or to a family burial plot in that vicinity. We have found no record of a headstone for her.
