Local news item, "Doddridge County Republican," Thursday, Dec 7 1916, in its entirety:
"What came near being a serious auto accident happened Saturday evening down near the McConnell mill. Uncle Jim Spurr was cleaning off the street in front of his property, when he was struck by an auto driven by Happy Connors, a well known glass worker. But luckily, the fender threw the aged man out of the way of the car, and he was not seriously injured. Failure of the horn to work when the driver went to give the proper signal, is said to have caused it." [3, 4]
