- In 2002, he took a job as caretaker of a family relative, James Cumpston, in Vienna, WV, with whom he enjoyed going to church and driving around to visit relatives. Then, Allen worked in the classroom of his friend Tom Hickman, who taught at Salem Elementary School. There, as a member of the Foster Grandparents Program, Grandpa Rymer helped many students who remember him fondly. Allen joked that he liked to go to school but he could never make it out of the third grade (where Tom taught).
